Unpack Your Knives!

The Next Food Network Star returned to some big changes on Sunday for season 6 including the addition of Giada De Laurentiis as a mentor and a spectacular move to Los Angeles.

“We’re using Giada as a mentor figure, where she talks about her experiences being a host on a network, and that’s one more element we didn’t have before", said Co-host Bobby Flay.

Quite frankly, I once overheard a couple in the grocery store bantering the ingredients of one of Giada's recipes (Apparently, they had watched her show and were attempting to make whatever dish that was prepared on television). My immediate thought was...Well, never mind what my initial thought was at the time...Let's just say that I was on the verge of laughing at them in public.

Anyway, back to the show. I appreciate the lively tempo of the new format (Moving to L.A. was an obvious good decision) and a change-up in host/judges also certainly helps to enliven what was once viewed as a very dry program.

I would change a few other things about the show, as well - such as stocking the entire panel with Food Network stars (Why have only one on the panel?), appoint Guy Fieri as host (Agreed, his looks are distracting, but he does bring personality), and completely, unequivocally change the set. Moreover, there are a number of things that I would overhaul about the ENTIRE network - but, that is a discussion for another time (Remind me later).

With the latest season, the show appears to be patterning after Bravo's ultra successful cook-off program Top Chef, which might not be a bad idea...

Say Hello To The New BH Housewives

Finally!! Bravo is adding on more to their already jam-packed roster of Real Housewives: The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (We will keep you updated on the premiere date).

Alright, here’s a sneak peek at the latest line-up of high priestesses:

  • Camille Donatacci Grammer: The former model has been married to actor Kelsey Grammer for 13 years. They have two children, both born via surrogate due to health issues Camille has battled for years. You can be sure that we’ll learn all about her ailments during the show.
  • Kim Richards: The divorced mother of four was a child star, appearing in 1975 version of Escape to Witch Mountain. She happens to have a famous niece, Paris & Nicky Hilton.
  • Kyle Richards: The youngest sister of Kathy Hilton and Kim Richards, she is also married with four daughters.
  • Lisa Vanderpump-Todd: The onetime actress owns two restaurants and has three children (With husband Kenneth).
  • Taylor Armstrong: The 38-year-old married management consultant and mother of a 4-year-old daughter is the youngest Housewife and may be the most charitable thanks to her longtime involvement with L.A.’s 1736 Family Crisis Center.
  • Adrienne Maloof-Nassif: Her husband’s a plastic surgeon and her family owns the Las Vegas Palms Resort and Casino, the Sacramento Kings, meaning it's highly likely that she IS the richest of the entire group.

Ladies, Welcome to OUR HOOD!

The Hare Is Back!

Bravo brought back "Shear Genius" for a new third season. This time, without famed Angel beauty, Jaclyn Smith.

The new hosts, model/handbag designer Camila Alves and Jonathan ("It's about Hare") Antin team up for this season. Antin is recognized from another Bravo series "Blow Out" - no, not to be confused with "Flipping Out" - which we believed should have been the title, nor is it, "Work Out" - the other "Out" Bravo show.

Familiar judges Kim Vo (Whom we absolutely love!) and Orlando Pita make their return from the second season. Most may vaguely remember Alves from the checkstand tabloids, being that she is the mother of 2 children with boyfriend Matthew (I'm hot, but also kind of weird) McConaughey - maybe this helped in landing the hosting gig...idk.

Top Chef Roulette

This week Bravo also aired the season finale of Top Chef: Las Vegas (Magical Elves) on Wednesday evening.

My Comment: Who won? No really, have you EVER seen a more confusing season finale? If you have read the judges blogs (I am not encouraging you to do so, unless you have about an hour of free time to spend on being unproductive), but there appears to be some 'Surprise' conclusions as to who wanted whom to win.

Now then, it appears the determined winner was contestant Chef, Michael Voltaggio - according to you - the "Completely unlikeable of the two bland Voltaggio brothers", who appeared on the show. Quite frankly, I would have preferred Kevin (aka Yukon Cornelius), for the win.

Moreover, 'unlikeable/bland' is an astute commentary on your part, as I could not agree more and also personally found the entire season 'bland' and filled with unlikeable and generally irrelevant characters.

For some reason, Top Chef has become literally a characture of itself - a disturbing version of 'Jumping the Shark'. I have analyzed the show with you and continue to be slightly puzzled as to why the gloss is beginning to rapidly fade.

Is it the contestants (Now appearing more like characters in a reality show, more than professional Chefs), or could it be the judges (Padma appears to be trying at great lengths to carry the show, while Tom appears to minimizing his appearances in the show), or is the incessant "Apprentice-like" product placement, "Your reward/prize is (Insert cookware, appliances, or Glad family of products here)".

Let's hope the Chefs can finally figure out how to make dessert by next season, before someone comes up with the idea for a Just Desserts show...oops, too late.

Million Dollar Drama

This week Bravo aired the final episode of Million Dollar Listing (World of Wonder), ending a third season.

My Comment: This show (In it's current version, not the original) is one of my favorites, however not for the reasons one would normally expect.

After all, the show is not particularly useful, insightful (Attempts have been made), nor of memorable intellect. My reasons for viewing the program would be strictly for the same reason that I enjoy viewing Action Movies....'Mindless Bender'.

If you have not seen the program, it largely follows a group of young Real Estate Agents (Late 20's, early 30's) in what would appear to be big time Real Estate deals...Not so much. The show is more of glamorous narcissism of agents Madison, Chad and Josh.

Much like my own life (Although, I am not a Real Estate Agent), the mini-series is more a look at the beautiful, superficial, and conflicted malcontents as they 'Act' on camera in contrived situations, modeled and condensed representations of what would take months in real life to resolve - now, that within itself is some great writing.

See ya' next season.

Your Reality TV Emmy Nominees...

Friends!

Well, here we are in another great week...Hope all is well. On this side, business is robust and I could not be happier (Ah, let me rephrase this comment, on the subject of more profits, I am always in a good mood).

Speaking of, I bring even more good news. We have received the latest group of Emmy Nominations, so without further delay, let us get right down to business.

Here is what we have that pertains to our favorite subject of Reality TV...

Twenty-two reality television shows received a total of 63 nominations in last week's announcement of the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominees -- with the number of shows and amount of total nominations both representing the genre's highest figures ever.

Leading the 2008-2009 reality TV Emmy Awards nomination field for the third consecutive year is Dancing with the Stars (ABC), which received 10 nominations from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences -- besting the eight it had received each of the last two years.

In addition, Dancing with the Stars (10 nominations) represents the most ever for a reality series in a single year and the show was able to claim two Emmy Awards last year after it had previously been shut out in 2006-2007. The series had received six nominations in its first season in 2005-2006 and won a total of exactly two, to be precise.

American Idol (Fox) received eight nominations, tying its previous record in 2005-2006 and placing it second behind only Dancing with the Stars. AI has claimed one Emmy Award in each of the last two years after it had previously been shut out during its first four years of eligibility, despite receiving 22 nominations.

The Amazing Race (CBS) quite possibly the most successful reality show at the Emmys with 11 statues -- received seven nominations, placing it behind only Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. The seven nominations represent the highest total ever for The Amazing Race, which had been nominated for six Emmys last year and five Emmys in each of the previous three years.

Moreover, The Amazing Race was once again nominated in the Outstanding Reality-Competition Program category, which it has won every year since the Academy first created the category six years ago.

The host of the show, Phil Keoghan, was recognized by receiving a nod in the Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program category.

Keoghan will be competing in a six-nomination field that also includes a shared nomination for Top Chef (Bravo) host Padma Lakshmi and "co-host" and top judge, Tom Colicchio.

The remaining competitors also within the category, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, Project Runway host Heidi Klum 'Seal', Dancing with the Stars host Tom Bergeron, and Survivor host Jeff 'Dimples' Probst -- all of whom were included in the category's inaugural set of nominees last year and the group of hosts that cannot ad-lib in front of a live audience, if you may recall (Minus Howie Mandel).

Bravo's Top Chef and So You Think You Can Dance (ABC) each received their highest total of nominations ever with a total of 5 nominations (Both in their fourth year of eligibility and won one award each last year).

Other nominees included: Kathy Griffin's My Life On The D-List (Bravo), Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch (Discovery) - Hi Tom B!, Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations (Travel Channel), MythBusters and Dog Whisperer (National Geographic), Intervention (A&E), and The American Life (Showtime).

How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris, who was nominated as an outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, will serve as your host.

The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards airs September 20th, on CBS.

Project Run-a-way Finds Home!

'Allo 'Allo!

My week has been incredible thus far, and hope the same for you!

First, thank you for all of your kind and funny emails (I heard) in response to my last post of concern about "Over Used Movie Cliches".

Ah, there are soo many over extended, drawn out familiars and literally we could discuss for a number of weeks all that is wrong with the finished products made by the creative minds of this town.

However, rather than wrong - let us discuss something right...

Ladies and Gentleman, We have Runway!

Welcome to Your New Lifetime.
Late last week, a resolution for the legal wrangling behind the hit show Project Runway was finally achieved between Harvey Weinstein (Executive Producer, Weinstein Co.) and Bravo (NBC Universal).

An official statement released declared the negotiations successful and the long awaited 6th season of Project Runway is finally cleared to air on it's new network home, Lifetime.

According to Andrea Wong (CEO of Lifetime), "I couldn’t be more excited that Lifetime will bring its viewers an amazing, all-new season of Project Runway this summer."

Wong continued, "As the highest-rated cable network for women, Lifetime is the perfect home for this outstanding program as well as its companion series Models of the Runway. All of us at Lifetime are thrilled to move forward with Heidi, Tim, Nina, Michael, The Weinstein Company and the entire Project Runway team."

We all agree...

Fans of the Runway
Supporting viewers of Project Runway are enraptured that the 'negotiations' have finally been put to rest and the show will return to the air (Official air date yet to be announced)- there has been tons of anticipation and relief.

One item of note about TV fans - they do not take the removal or delay of their shows lightly (The power of the masses for the show Jericho have more than proven this point).

They (TV fans) OWN the shows and the actors within the shows are like members of their own real life families. Movie fans hardly react (If at all) with such vim and vigor....TV fans are a powerful group.

Bravo vs. Lifetime: A Comparison
As you may be aware, I am big huge fan of Lifetime and equally thrilled about the news -

Lifetime has a lot on the ball and I really compliment the moves of the CEO, as they are the moves that I would make to bring the Network to status as top level competitor (Of course, I have to own everything, so it would only be a matter of time -aaah, I digress).

So, here is what we have on Lifetime:
  • Army Wives (Total hit)
  • Desperate Housewives
  • DietTribe

As well, my interest in Bravo is no less significant.

Much of my TV viewing time is spent watching Bravo - the programming is hip, young progressive and plays slightly edgy and relevant to my age group (We are an edgy crowd and everything has be fast - due to our short attention spans), without being insulting like another network which shall remain nameless but contains shows with the word "Love" in the title.

So, here are the notables currently airing on Bravo:
  • Millionaire Matchmaker (Love anything with the word "Millionaire" in the title)
  • Housewives of New York City / New Jersey
  • Make Me Supermodel (Yummy Tyson)
  • Tabatha's Salon Takeover

Perhaps you may have noticed the similarity between the two networks?

In the case of Bravo, my point, what NBC the network cannot do, Bravo can - it is a near perfect balance. Where the 'near' is that hyper-mega corporation GE owns NBC which controls Bravo. If you have ever worked in a corporate structure, there is only so much you can do within it's structure.

On the other side, Lifetime does not have to answer or make decisions based on a corporate interest - they can expand, test format, content, and promotions for advertisers with much more flexibility and freedom.

I expect great things from both networks within the near future...

A Complete Evening of Posers Posing...

Hey Friends & Fans!

I am feeling of royal brilliance today (Or, so I believe) and had a number of great ideas about a number of subjects (All of which now escape me - of course).

So let us get straight to the point, before I am intercepted by phone calls, text messages, emails (I hear that my inbox (One of) currently has an excess well above 3,000 messages as of this writing - Amazing!). On the one, it is a thrilling victory but on the other, someone has to actually read and manage the correspondence - for the task is evolving into a full-time job for a certain someone I now affectionately refer to as the 'Director of Email Communications'.

We are in for a treat this week...The Models Are Back!

The Rise of The Models
I am certain you are just as thrilled - this week, we have the re-emergence of new seasons of America's Next Top Model AND Make Me A Supermodel .

For the sake of this lively chatter, we will refer to each according to acronyms because the titles are rather lengthy as follows: America's Next Top Model (ANTM) and Make Me A Supermodel(MMAS). I mean really, what happened to the simple 'One' word titles? Here are my suggestions (Free of charge): America's Next Top Model as "Model" and Make Me A Supermodel as "Supermodel". Confusing? Wait, it will be...

A Model History
As you may be aware by now of my affinity for all things "Model" and perhaps this interest began when I first looked through Vogue magazine when just a young "Tween". Of course, reminisicing back to the days, my style was highly mature, sophisticated and fashionable.

Even my teachers would comment about how nicely dressed my attire for someone of my age. Well, as a young teen and truth be revealed, I had not a budget for such clothing, so I would infiltrate my mother's closet (Mum was quite stunning in wardrobe filled with a number of hats, boots, scarves, head wraps and suede jackets). Mine was merely sophomoric attempt.

I lament one holiday season, when I had started working at a high-end department store (Oh HAPPY DAY), my entire paycheck would be literally spent before I even received the meaningless paper.

Pay Me In clothes!
My closet was soon filled with Liz Claiborne, Gucci, Guess, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Fendi, Hilfiger, endless eyewear and expensive fragrance - Instead of looking 15, I appeared to be a young 35 year old sophisticate - for some reason, this had duel created other worldly status and class all of my own in high school. My 'Character' was one that had never been previously seen. I looked like the OWNER of the school or some successful business, rather than common student.

Where ever I happened to be, people would ask one of the following questions, "Excuse me do you work here?" Or, "Are you the owner?". "No" and "Not yet" were my typical responses, while quietly thinking to myself, do I look that old?! This strategic attempt at being a mature model is epically back-firing.

Thinking back, I understand why teachers were intimidated by my 'Ominous' presence and as well,my insistence of doing anything of my choosing (Students, do not try this at home unless you have unshakable will and own your confidence - you must carefully think through the risk of possible consequences, for this prior assessment allowed me to avoid turmoil with parents - there is an art to pushing the envelope).

Today, not much has changed and I still peruse Vogue for inspiration/style and living in L.A.,it is appropriate well received attire...I still push the envelope (But now have Power over all decisions). Oh, and in case you are wondering, I am still OMINOUS! At least that is what I hear...Ah, brings a smile to my face really.

Back To The Models On TV
This week begins season 14 of ANTM and as mentioned within previous posts, had it not been for Tyra Banks to single handily bring us the world of fashion - we would not have such an influx of model related shows as MMAS, Project Runway, Most Smartest Model, The Janice Dickenson Modeling Agency (A+ Male Models!), The Agency (Oh Bravo, bring this one back!), Model over 35, True Beauty, et al.

As well, this week also begins the 2nd season of MMAS on Bravo, starring Tyson Beckford and a new co-host (An Australian Model).

Now Turn To The Left...
Here is where the promised confusion begins: The two shows are very similar in nature where as ANTM is all about 19/20 something year old young women, MMAS is about 19/20 something year old women and men (The Co-ed version) as model hopefuls.

The shows both feature former 'Supermodel' hosts, celebrity/ industry type judges, model related tasks (Largely photographic in nature), make-overs, legendary photographers, critiques, judges table, eliminations, and strangers from different parts of the country and/or world living together in a mansion/loft...for 13 weeks (Recall, this is mandatory for ALL competition based reality shows).

Even further, the shows are now both airing on Wednesday evening, one right after another, on different networks. ANTM airs on The CW. MMAS is now scheduled in new time slot on Bravo, right after ANTM.

Quite frankly, a brilliant move by Bravo - capture the same audience and share the market (If you like that show, you will definitely like this show).

Finally, it will be equally as interesting to see if the same advertisers appear within both shows - sounds like a great opportunity to get double exposure and re-enforce branding for products of the fashion & beauty industry. Ah, branded entertainment at it's finest. Now, about that Vogue TV show idea...

Project Run-a-way

Well, hello!

The week is finally over and I feel satisfied enough to exclaim another moderately good week (I did not use the term great - mind you, trying for a little variety).

Today, let's discuss Project Runway or as I have recently termed Project Run-a-way, Auf Wiedersehen!

The Off-Runway Drama
Although, we had just viewed the Project Runway 5 season finale just a few weeks prior, you may have heard or read recent reports that Project Runway is moving from Bravo to Lifetime Television.

Apparently, there has been "Trouble in Paradise" as over the past several months legal fisticuffs have been underway between NBC (Parent company of Bravo) and Bob and Harvey Weinstein (Weinstein Company).

“Runway” had been tentatively scheduled to begin on Lifetime on Jan. 7. Lifetime has built much of its winter schedule around the arrival of “Runway,” one of the most successful recent shows in cable television.

However with all of the legal wrangling, the debut of Project Runway 6 seems further away...

So, what exactly happened?
It all began last spring, when allegedly NBC chose not to renew the contract of Project Runway thus the Weinstein company began to entertain offers from other networks. One offer in particular from Lifetime.

NBC is claiming that they were not allowed to exercise a clause in its contract, which said that it gets to refuse the move when Lifetime bought the rights to produce the next five years of the show.

According to sources, deal points were significantly more appealing than what NBC would have paid to renew the show (Allegedly, of course). Lifetime paid $150 million to air the show over the next five years.

Last month, a New York judge has blocked the show's move to the Lifetime network, claiming producers at The Weinstein Company violated Bravo bosses' right of first refusal to future cycles of Project Runway when choosing to switch networks earlier this year.

"We've shot the whole season already, we don't know what will happen, so we're kind of waiting to hear what the bigwigs have to say on what's gonna happen with this battle. I just hope we air," said Supermodel and creator Heidi Klum.

The Runway Copycat
A recent article in the New York Times (You know of my thoughts about the New York Times), stated that the reason NBC was trying to delay the passing of the Project Runway to Lifetime was because NBC is developing a "Copycat" show.

Recent reports have circulated that Bravo was actively posting (Via Craigslist) over the course of the weekend in search for talent for a new show called "Fashion House". Note, if casting notices are being posted, more than likely the project has received a greenlight.

Let's Kiss and Make-Up...
Having said, Bravo is one my favored networks for a number of reasons. I appreciate networks that push the envelope socially and culturally - what NBC cannot, Bravo can...Queer Eye, Project Runway, Top Chef, Top Design.

It is undeniable that Project Runway helped shape Bravo as a Pop Culture network...Now, Lifetime will hope to accomplish much of the same...

Quite frankly, I cannot say enough good things about Lifetime and their recent updates to their programming schedule. The network is making a conscious move to diversify its slate with programs other than "Woman in Crisis" made for television movies.

Does it not make sense that rather than spending millions of dollars and thousands of hours of legal wrestling to acquire Project Runway from Bravo, why would not Lifetime simply develop a spin-off show? In fact, Fashion House could have been the new show airing on Lifetime...Is it just me or is this NOT Rocket Science? Ah, it's fun to think...

Anyway on a more positive exodus, the good news is that the new strategy is brilliant move and will place Lifetime on the map as a serious competitor. Stay Tuned...

Let The NBC Olympic Games Begin!

Hello, Hello, Hello

Ah, the end of the week - I feel as if this has become a permanent opening statement for our conversations.

As always, much continues to happen in the 'World of News and Politics' (Well, the one that matters most: Hollywood). Business as usual if you follow the blurred lines of news and celebrity gossip.

Speaking of the world, the major event on this monumental date is the start of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, also known as today's topic of this monumental blog (-?).

My Olympic Beijing Snap

Today, I am enjoying a slowed pace from my usual exacerbating schedule to relish the start of the 2008 Summer Olympics, which meant sleeping in (7:30 AM) and a decent breakfast in bed.

I was indeed truly looking forward to viewing the competition and had cleared most of the day's schedule.

However, I am largely dismayed with moderate inconvenience...

For you see, the coverage will not air until this evening - I am so disappointed as I had expected to awaken to the sight and sound of competition. Further, I was looking forward to celebrating with an Olympic Social (aka Party) for much of the day - now, I must wait until this evening. Very inconvenient. How I was not aware of such an important scheduling conflict, remains to be seen.

Having said, now choices must be made for the evening's entertainment and guess what may NOT make my viewership and schedule this evening?

Get Ready For NBC Olympic Television

I am sure that you would agree that one of the many benefits to living in such 'Advanced' times is the ability to access to different forms of media for news, entertainment, and as mentioned in last blog, Broadband Television.

Although the official start of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics began some 10 hours prior to this post, within the past hour, I have been literally searching for video coverage of the events.

The results so far have not been promising as I have only been able to discover brief written coverage (There appears to be more than enough words to read about the events, competitors, opening ceremony, still photos), but without actual full length video footage.

One would expect coverage to be abundant of such a worldwide event. However, equal coverage does not appear to be the name of the game. Massive saturation is forthcoming to every form of available media.

At my speculation, it appears as if NBC Universal (General Electric) has secured (Purchased) the rights to broadcast in entirety - meaning the right to control what and where you see Olympic coverage on television, cable, radio, as well as over the Internet.

More Coverage Than You Could Possibly Ever Want...
According to friends at the Hollywood Reporter, NBC Universal is reportedly preparing to air roughly 3600 hours (When - I am not certain) of Olympic programming over the next 2.5 weeks - across its number of networks including NBC, Bravo, Oxygen, CNBC, MSNBC (175 hours), Telemundo (Airing 380 hours alone), and USA Network (Bidding 165 hours).

Further, more than 2,000 hours will also be available via streaming over the Web, Video On Demand (VOD), HD, as well accessible by mobile devices, and specialty channels such as soccer and basketball and unique language stations (Japanese, Mandarin and Korean Channels) - just in case you missed the continuous, over saturating live coverage of the 34 events on the before mentioned Networks.

Without a doubt, coverage will be unprecedented and the largest media coverage in the history of the Olympic Games. More than likely, you will at some point view the games over the next few weeks and this is what NBC Uni is hoping as more than $1 Billion dollars of advertising is also set to air during the broadcast.

I have a few more ideas...But, we will save them for later...I have a '2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony After Party' to attend!

You can brush up before the tonight's broadcast on NBC's Official site located at the following: http://www.nbcolympics.com/

Our Summer of Reality

Here we are...
Welcome friends, we are in the middle of yet another week on the dry arid wasteland (aka Los Angeles) - hot enough for you? The weather is certainly delivering more sunshine and heat than one could have hoped and I will finally admit to being 'a little warm' in this pre-summer season.

Let The Season Begin.
While everyone is busy viewing the season ending episodes of the network ratings behemoths, America's Next Top Model, The Bachelor, Dancing with the Stars (Congrats to Kristi Yamaguchi), and American Idol - I am simply too busy (Meaning, I refuse to make time) to sit down to watch regular television, when all of the 'great' entertainment is on the web (Gasp!).

Having said, we can all commend the networks for trailing into the Internet space with carefully selected clips (Rather than full-episode) - all we need are the highlights. However, the cable networks have the right idea and a clear vision of the inevitable future of distribution, as they are presenting a much better offering of original web based content AND complimentary full-episodes.

On The Web
Admittedly, I watch more shows on the web, than on regular television...As peculiar as this may sound, I am all about 'Control'. Oh, read this now networks and cable companies of America, I need to watch what I want, when it is convenient for my schedule!

What upwardly mobile person has time to sit around waiting for a scheduled program to air, and provide viewership at the same day and time for 13 weeks? Of course, the measure of convenience would simply be to just make the show available on the web and it will somehow, miraculously make my schedule.

Speaking of schedules...
The summer officially begins this week and we should look ahead with giddy excitement to this summer of reality - Alas, there are plenty of season ending episodes to watch from your lovely air conditioned (I hope) abode.

Reality Show CATFIGHTS!

Why, Hello!

It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Tinseltown - the sun is out (Of course, as always), the birds are chirping and the ocean is roaring - all around it is a lovely day.

With all of this perceived peace and tranquility abound, I cannot help but think about what else...Fighting!

The topic of today's muse was going to be on the subject of Project Runway (As I had eluded in last week's discussion) - Here is the sixty-second overview:

For those of you who may not be aware, there is an apparent legal battle transpiring between Bravo (Parent company NBC Universal) and show producers, The Weinstein Co. (Bob and Harvey) claiming that they ignored the contract, as it was announced earlier that Project Runway was moving to Lifetime. Speculation is that Lifetime will pay a significantly higher licensing fee than Bravo (The network's biggest show to date).

Granted the above is a battle between real world 'Titans' (Via Attorneys), but aligns well with the subject. Now, on to the subject "Du Jour": Fighting!

Drama is Dramatic Entertainment
Whether it be in on the job, in a courtroom or in a mansion (For 13 weeks, no doubt), fighting is always a constant area of contention between contestants, litigants, competitors, co-workers, all of the before mentioned have been or are current conditions of a reality show.

However, I am sure you may have noticed there is a disturbingly increasing number of reality shows that contain FIGHTING as a storyline. In fact, it is becoming mandatory of most competitive reality shows to place two contentious characters together for the purpose of dramatic 'Entertainment' value.

Even more of a concern is that characters are usually female. Quite frankly, most females do not fight in real life (True, words may be exchanged in heated manner, but it is not common for fisticuffs to be involved).

Having said, I barely ever raise my voice (Unless I am completely disgusted with the person, I generally associate yelling with unattractive grotesquery) and would never dream of raising a hand to anyone; my choice is to usually walk away and ignore them all together (Ah, for this is far more effective and your point of repulsion is made without excessive words).

Furthermore, I can only remember one time in the 6Th grade getting into an altercation (Yelling and pushing) with my best friend and neighbor while waiting for the school bus one morning. The situation (Just as most arguments) was over nothing really important (I had defected from the clique and chose to hang-out with the 'non-popular', it was not well received) - it was truly one of the most ridiculous things and several years later, we had a great laugh about the incident.

Real or Just TV?
I am sure that we would both agree that fighting has been going on since the beginning of time. Obviously. However, has fighting on your favorite reality show been going on since their inception or are we seeing a disappointing increase? My guess is the latter.

For example, shows that present a dating or job scenario usually have one or two characters at odds. Most reality shows are called living social experiments. So, what does that say about us?

Shows such as what I call, "Anything of Love" in the title on a certain cable network, have had a number of castings for over-the-top, in-your-face type of personalities placed in unnatural conditions (Living in a mansion for a number weeks, competing for a questionable prize) for the purpose of dramatic entertainment.

Although you would expect to see such raucous behavior in cable reality shows, we are now viewing this contaminated behavior spilling over into mainstream network reality shows, including America's Next Top Model, Search for The Next Pussycat Doll, and this week's episode of ABC's The Bachelor had also featured a scuttle between two female characters (I could say more, however, I do not wish to even DIGNIFY the details of the loud quarrel).

Do people really like to see reality show in-fighting? Does it really help the ratings? Many agree that the re-emergence of this format of general orchestrated discourse is undoubtedly becoming quite tiresome and clearly contrived.

Back to The Basics
Yes, it is true that reality shows are microcosms of real life (For this statement is largely subject to debate) and that disagreements occur at all stages of human life.

However, my challenge for these shows is to always present conflict resolution. Many of these programs are missing a tremendous opportunity to educate and inform viewers that conflicts are not only unnecessary, ill conceived miscommunication, but can as well be resolved and laughed about for many years.

Dating Advice...Coming To A TV Near You!

I was just thinking of you!

This past week has been another amazing week: Grammy Awards, NAACP Awards also last week.

A friend had phoned to tell me that she could not speak because it's 'Award Season' - which was more than fine as the Writer's Strike officially ended this week (Which incidentally cost us about $3.2 Billion) and I have way to much work in which to return....

A Time For Love
Amidst the 'Awards' there was an ode to love, Valentine's Day. Not to get side tracked so early in this discussion, but do you know that it has been said that Valentine's Day was a mere fabrication induced by the Greeting Card industry (capitalized by Joyce C. Hall, founder of Hallmark)? Further, it is said that Valentine's Day is the second largest day for Greeting Card sales.

Anyway, as I blissfully enjoyed the day with my loved one, I began contemplation of the new plethora of dating related shows. My business partner is well aware of my interests in dating shows and I speak to him quite often about numerous outlandish (Or, so he claims) ideas for new dating related television fare.

In my opinion, people will NEVER tire of watching dating shows - Anyone up for a return of Love Connection 2008?

Not Your Average Love...
Which brings me to mention that dating on television is going through a rapid evolution.

As I have knowingly mentioned on several previous occasions, many ailed serial shows (I do not need to mention names, however if they have season after season - they are ailed serials) need the help of a professional matchmaker. Low and behold, my advice was accepted and the entire new offering of dating shows are about Matchmakers!

It's All In The Match Making
Aside from the usual serials of love-lorn looking for the loveless (Joe Millionaire, The Bachelor, For Love or Money, Age of Love, Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, Et Al...), consciousness and rationale are beginning to give way to a new type of format - the Matchmaker.

Quite frankly, the bottom line is that it is possible the general 'Cattle Call' of talent and forcing them into an unnatural living situation (In a mansion for 13 weeks no less - wink), is not only becoming tiresome to watch for the general audience at large, but it just does not work (Ah, maybe that is the idea).

Enter the New Breed of Love: Taking inventory of all the recent good-intentioned match/love advice related shows, we have:

  • Can't Get A Date (Vh1) (Show can now be seen on Logo)
  • The Pick-Up Artist (Vh1)
  • Confessions of a Matchmaker (A&E)
  • Millionaire Matchmaker (Bravo)
  • Matched in Manhattan (Lifetime)

And, that could be just the beginning, if any of the above carry on to second seasons (Keep in mind each of the above within the list are fairly new and additional seasons have yet to be picked-up by the network).

Further, what is amazing is that each show 'touts' an expert in which every currently single person should listen.

The all new shows attempt to expertly pair soul-mate-seeking singles who are unable to find a partner through old-fashioned methods such as frequenting bars, online dating sites and going on blind dates arranged by friends (Does anyone still allow this drastic measure?).

My question is do these 'Love' experts actually take their own advice? Only one of the above mentioned shows includes an amalgamated expert (Matched in Manhattan).

Moreover, the expert advice bestowed on the starry-eyed appears to be common sense (As mum would say, "Common sense is not so common"). The experts make the effort appear effortless (Get a haircut and some new clothes, hold a smile for 5 seconds and do not talk about yourself too much on the first date).

Quite frankly, if dating were as easy as the expert advice, I think more people would be in relationships - I do not believe that anyone would choose to remain single and alone for an extended period of time...Perhaps, there will be fewer single people after watching these shows?

Your Reality TV Schedule for 2008

Hello, hello, hello...

As we have officially returned back to regularly scheduled programming (Amidst the horrific writer's strike - which continues to halt production here in Los Angeles and now apparently around the entire world). Friends, neighbors and countrymen/women - Stop the MADNESS!

Where's The Promised Hollywood Ending?
Before we begin today's escape, I wish to quickly mention just as friends at the Weinstein Company, we are also in the process of making our own deals with independent writers - if all of the independents joined together, we can force an end to this debacle. We need a Hollywood Ending.

More Reality on The Schedule
Now, on to a more hopeful subject is the new and returning reality offerings for 2008.

I am often asked, do I know about shows before the air on television - um...YEAH! Sometimes I hear about shows a year or more in advance and by the time it is aired I am usually thinking, "Did we not already see that show?".

The second most frequently asked question is "Do I actually watch reality shows?". Again, yes. When I make time, I am usually watching a reality show or a movie when I REALLY create time.

So, let's see what we will be watching this season (Yes, you may print this list and tape to the refrigerator):
  • American Idol 7 (FOX), Jan. 15
  • My Fair Brady…Maybe Baby? (VH1), Jan. 20
  • Millionaire Matchmaker (Bravo), Jan. 22
  • Gauntlet III (MTV), Jan. 23
  • Survivor 16 (CBS), Feb. 7
  • Big Brother 9 (CBS), Feb. 12
  • Baby Borrowers (NBC), Feb. 18
  • Pussycat Dolls 2: Girlicious (CW), Feb. 18

  • America’s Next Top Model 10 (CW), Feb. 20
  • Oprah’s Big Give (ABC), March 2

  • When Women Rule the World (FOX), March 3

  • Dancing with the Stars 5 (ABC), March 17
  • The Bachelor 12 (ABC), March 17
  • Top Chef 4 (Bravo), March 19

  • Hell’s Kitchen 4 (FOX), April 1
  • The Real World Hollywood (MTV), May 21

Not to worry, there are many more reality shows beyond May 21st and I will provide witty analysis (aka 'Comment') on each of the shows as we near closer to the broadcast date.

We can still look forward to the debut of Randy Jackson's Best Dance Crew (Formerly known as World Moves), Farmer Wants a Wife, and My Dad is Better Than Your Dad (Return to 5th grade - this is not part of the title, however the statement should be)...

As well, all of this reality fare around Superbowl 500 (Not really, I am just feeling largely despondent that my Seattle is no longer in contention for the title, for yet another year!).

Wait There's More...
Having said, future Blogs are guaranteed forthcoming on the new shows, such as Millionaire Matchmaker (Bayonne Entertainment), Baby Borrower's (Love Productions), Oprah's Big Give (Produced by Harpo Productions), When Women Rule the World (Rocket Science Labs) - which promises to be not only realistic (IMHO), but as well, entertaining - Can you say, "Man Servant?" - this should be good fun!

The good news is that from the appearance of the above schedule, you should have continuous reality entertainment each and every night of the week (Or, at least that is the idea)...

The Reality Departed of 2007

Ah, I am finally getting up-to-date, thank you for all of your email messages and holiday wishes!

While I was busy discussing all of my favorite things last week, Entertainment Weekly published it's list of Best/Worst of 2007. Some of the items were deserved of being deemed "Best" while others were relegated to the Junk pile.

So....I started thinking about some of the "Disappointments" last year in the world of reality television. I know it is difficult to believe that there could possibly be reality TV show casualties, but alas there were some real ("Insert words here"), in 2007.

Allow me to refresh your memory with the following:

1. On the Lot (Fox). What happened with this show?! I have had many conversation about this show with numerous people. Although the show had all of the right American Idol type ingredients (3 credible judges, a host, amateur talent, and a public voting system), something just did not keep the interest. Even Mark Burnett does not even know what happened!

2. The Next Great American Band (Fox). Again, another AI scenario - One foreign judge with an accent, 80's Diva (Sheila E. this time), cutie pop rocker Johnny Rzeznick (Goo Goo Dolls) and some dude who was trying to be Ryan Seacrest = Snoozefest.

3. The Apprentice (NBC). Well, we know what happened here (Mass commercial product placement disguised as 'tasks').

Quite frankly, Don does not even know the names of the marketing executives who commandeer being written into the show (It's tough to believe that some nameless marketing execs at some corporation are "Good friends" of Trump). Even more, the 'tasks' always involve a plug for Trump's latest project (Golf course, casino, condo, shuttle, business suits, cuff links, steaks, water, et al). So far, the success of this new season will be subjective.

4. The Great American Dream Vote (ABC). This show seemed like a good idea - who does not want their dreams to come true? You mean, Donnie Osmond could not appeal to the masses? Or, maybe the problem was the show...Viewers commented that the said 'Dreams' of the contestants were the issue (Guy who wanted hair plugs to propose to his girlfriend). The dreams just were not big enough...

5. The Bachelor (ABC). Oooh, apparently many of you are still discussing the final episode in which Bachelor Brad did not pick either of the two remaining hopefuls - I still think he made the best choice by choosing to remain single...We do not want to see yet ANOTHER failed Bachelor.

Well, the good news is that despite a lousy track record for The Bachelor, ABC is already working on The Bachelor 12. My suggestion is that they consider bringing in a professional matchmaker or relationship counselor - but, that's a different show.

6. Hey Paula! (Bravo). Yes, this deserves yet another mention. Paula announced that she will not be returning for another season of her version of reality, claiming that it was too painful for her to watch - many would agree.

7. National Bingo Night. Come on, your grandparents probably played it - why would it not work on prime-time network television?

8. Armed & Famous (CBS). Celebrities as Police Officers....In Muncie, Indiana. This should could have gotten lively had the location been here in Tinseltown, but I digress. You proved a point that we cannot mix 'D-List' celebs as Police Officers in a small town on a national network - Got it!

9. Nashville (USA). Have I mentioned American Idol too many times within this post? You cannot use the same ingredients and expect to have something unique in every dish...Huh?

Finally, last place goes to not one, but two One-hit wonders:

10. Anchorwoman (Fox) and The Victoria Beckham Show (NBC). Anchorwoman (About a former something or other who moves across country to a small town to work at a TV station) - yanked after one episode.

As for the Victoria Beckham Show - a similar tale about another former something moving across country (Literally) to a small town (L.A.) to work on a reality show. Only her show was pared down from a full blown reality series, to an hour special.

I like Victoria Beckham fine, and am looking forward to the Spice Girls reunion. However, British Press was over embellishing that American Producers were 'Clamoring' or in this case 'Clamouring' and falling all over ourselves to sign Beckham to a deal....Not quite. Most people on this side of the pond do not even know of Victoria Beckham. This could easily go down as the most expensive $10 Million dollar one-off reality show deal in recent history.

Let's look forward to more reality show departures in 2008 - Just go easy on the ones that are mine!

Favorite Things From 2007...

Happy New Year!

Are you as excited as I am about the new year?

It feels great to be back in action and although I do have literally thousands of emails from various people, beloved friends, groups, agents, managers, celebrities, production companies, business associates and the rest of the country - Further, I also have a mountain of work in which to delegate - but, let's have some fun...

On to another year...Before we go, we should stop and reminisce about a few things that made 2007 special. While on vacation, I began thinking about Oprah's "Favorite things" and thought, Oprah has a list of favorite things - I should too! Except, the only difference is that I cannot give you each one under your seat...

So, here are my "Favorite things" for 2007 (Without specific order):

Favorite Movie: Transformers. Sure, it was loud, bombastic, over the top, and really without purpose - I think that was the idea...More important, I had saved up 2 years worth of 'in theater movie-watching' for this one and although I did not pay, it was worth every penny.

Favorite Reality Show: This is tough, considering that they are all my favorite.

However, I regularly Tivo'd and enjoyed Kimora Lee Simmons: Life In The Fab Lane (Stick Figure Productions). The show proves that a former runway model and former wife of a music mogul can continue on in life after retirement to run a billion dollar trendy fashion enterprise, shop for the most exclusive real estate in this town (Despite having a multi-acre mansion in New York) and be a devoted and loving mother all in the same - now that's 'Fabulosity' (Ah, one can only aspire to such a bling filled existence).

As well as, Flipping Out (Authentic Entertainment)(Jeff Lewis and I have soo much in common - just ask my people).

Of course, friends know that I also really like the show Best Week Ever (Vh1), more current events rather than reality, however I always manage to laugh out loud at least once during the program.

Lastly, honorable mention would be my friends Rob & Big (Mtv) - love these guys.

Favorite Website: Wikipedia, of course. Second place goes to a little friendly game called TV Bigshot (http://www.tvbigshot.com/).

Favorite YouTube Clip: There are a small handful and my favorite last year had to have been Miss Teen USA - Ms. South Carolina - because I have had many, many days just like this... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww).

Favorite Original Series (Scripted): Bionic Woman (NBC). Alright, just as you I had very high hopes for the re-imagined series from yesteryear.

Yeah, I remember watching the original when I was just a young toddler and was horrified to the point where I could not sleep from the episode with Bigfoot and those Fembots without face plates (Not the cheeky Austin Powers version). Perhaps the 2007 version would have been more interesting had they included the unmasked Fembots as well?

Favorite Gift: Anything/Everything Chocolate (Thank you Jay - I will be thinking of you when I am at the Gym).

Favorite Train Wreck: Hey Paula!, I mean Paula "The Gift" Abdul. Well, I admit that I was only able to watch a few episodes of the show when it had originally aired last spring. Ah, and people wonder why celebrities are delusional, paranoid and inept in real world *sigh*.

Favorite Reality Show Villain: Really, this one was tie between Tom Sizemore (Shooting Sizemore) and Danny Bonaduce (Breaking Bonaduce). I always say, there is no worse enemy than yourself.

Least Favorite Reality Show: Yeah, that would be anything with the word "Love" in the title. I do not need to name the specific shows, you know to which ones I am referring.

Favorite Friend: You. Thanks for hanging out with me on this blog.

Here's to a GREAT 2008!

XOXO

To Be Thankful...

It's the official Thanksgiving holiday here in the states...For this means it is a time to be thankful.

In good fun I thought it would be a good time (Amidst a break from festivous), to write today's Blog to provide a glimmer of pleasant distraction.

With all of the good spirit of the holiday cheer, it is a time to express all things in which we are thankful and below is my general list for my announcement of gratitude:

1). All things related to family, loved ones and friends: Of course, this is a given that should go without mention, however I am mentioning now to avoid questions/grief later.

2). My Co-workers (aka Assistants, Business Partners and Contractors): What would life be like without you? I have spent a great deal of time thinking about this and simply cannot find an answer (Well, at least not one that you would like - smile). You are beloved for all that you do and all of your hard work.

3). Television: Again, what would life be like without you? Well, instead of aspiring to build a multi-national media conglomerate empire, I probably would have went on to have a successful career as a Real Estate Tax Attorney or CPA (The dream of my parents) - that or a professional Tennis player...

4). Reality Shows: Yes, the self-contained dramatic social experiments known as reality TV. You have proven that anyone and anything can be on television - Ah, just wait until you see our new ideas!

The opportunities are endless and if I have my way, many people will be working for a very, very long time.

Having said, I am also especially thankful for the show America's Next Top Model which has provided countless hours of laughter and entertainment while bringing the world of modeling to the masses.

5). Bravo TV: Congratulations, you are the ONLY network on my list to receive mention within this list. Even though today you are playing an endless marathon of Top Chef episodes - I still Love Ya!

6). Celebrities: Because of the way you manage to just keep us compelled, while at the same time repelled, every single day of the week.

7). Broadband/Internet: Thank you Al Gore for 'inventing' the Internet and now you are off busy 'inventing' Global Warming, have fun...

8). 30-second Commercials: Well, because of your (often silly, loud, and annoying music from the 70's) exploits - how would we ever know what to buy? What to eat? What to wear? Or, even what to smell like?

As a result of your 'guidance', we can now be surely reminded that we need to be younger by using your beauty products, richer to afford your over-priced, un-reliable, low quality, gas guzzling cars, and thinner by taking your strangely named pills, using your exercise equipment and eating your special 'health' conscious food.

The point being, how would we EVER know that we need to buy things that we don't really need?

9). Tivo: Because there are only so many hours in the day to sit around and watch television.

10). My Dream Job: Always a fantastic challenge and I would not have it any other way. Also, I am thankful that I live in a town where you can be whomever you want and still have summer weather in the month of November - simply Amazing!

Last, but certainly not least: YOU!

Happy Holidays from yours truly.

Queer Eye For Everyone

The Fab Five
An interior designer, a fashion stylist, a chef, a beauty guru and someone we like to call the “concierge of cool” — responsible for all things hip, including music and pop culture.

Last week, we saw the return of the groundbreaking reality series, the Emmy Award-winning 'Queer Eye,' to a grand final season which concludes its four-year run with 10 all-new episodes with the Fab Five Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley and Jai Rodriguez.

What About the Straight Guy?
In this final return season (as mentioned in my last post), producers (Scout Productions) have revised the name of the show minus the 'For the Straight Guy'.

Thinking about it, I am curious as to the reason - I mean the original title rhymed so well - could it be that maybe the title was just too long or perhaps they are setting up another franchise for another group other than straight guys?

Whatever Happened To Queer Eye for the Straight Girl?
Once upon a time there was a similar show, but for the reconstruction of female 'Gal' - you had all of the same elements, fashion, recipes, clothing and tips, but for some reason something just did not work...

Oh, however the before mentioned 'Fab Five' were different and there were only four, rather than five. Could a fifth person made a difference?

Perhaps the issue could have been there were several other make-over shows already on the air at the time or maybe it could have been that women 'Gals' were not into guys telling them how to do things? Fine, so I made-up that last part.

Hair Care Products and Feng Shui
Since the Fab Five first "came out" to the world for the series premiere on July 15, 2003, straight guys everywhere knew they had finally found their 'Queer Eye.'

In a typical episode, the 'Fab Five' would arrive at the victim's house to assess his "level of style." The group ransacks the home, with a running "style" commentary on everything they find. In their investigation, each expert attempts to understand the unique preferences of the candidate in order to best advise him on how to improve. I believe it is called "Tear Down".

This fall grooming guru Douglas continues to advocate "manscaping," an effort to tame or remove unruly body hair; fashion maven Kressley "tzujs" his way to perfection; food and wine expert Allen advises on appropriate food and wine pairings; and culture vulture Rodriguez infuses self-confidence in those who need it most, while interior designer Filicia magically turns a drab room into a spectacle (I meant to say 'beautiful space').

An Identity Found
So, before all of the specials; book deals; product placements; international shows; an Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program (2004); the 'Queer Eye for the Straight Girl' spinoff; and even a makeover of members of the Boston Red Sox (2004 World Series Champions), Fab Five culture expert Jai Rodriguez said 'Queer Eye' was not exactly a hot commodity back in the day.

"When we first started, there was a lot of brands and company stores that didn't want to work with us initially before the show was successful because of the title Queer Eye," "Bravo went ahead and was very proud of the program and the title and stuff. So it was to their credit that we received the kind of success the show got."

To Boldly Go
While many were familiar with Bravo because of Inside the Actors Studio, the struggling former film and performing arts network presumably could have never imagined the five alternative men would launch the network into an entirely new direction.

Frances Berwick, Bravo's Executive Vice President of Programming & Production says, "'Queer Eye' refashioned Bravo when it premiered four years ago, and the Fab Five's areas of expertise are now the tentpoles of Bravo's programming: fashion, food, beauty, design and pop culture".

Welcome to the 21st Century
The reality is that in addition to re-defining a network, the success of 'Queer Eye' has received great critical acclaim and has opened an entire world for new socially aware programs and more importantly, a new way of thinking outside of the box of tradition (There is no such thing as Black and White).

The Zhoosh
By and large I am all for the male self-improvement movement (after all, we as women are the beneficiaries of such good work) and quite frankly there is plenty of inventory in which to work. I just hope that 'Straight Guys' are watching.
