The 81st Annual Academy Awards

Hello!

Welcome back to another great week.

I have a number of things transpiring this week - we are working diligently on this side with a number of projects, pitch meetings, and what not. In addition to revising and up-dating our business structure - the intention is to streamline for operational effeciency and the entire process has been a good challenge.

It is similar to the thought, if you ever want to know how much junk you have, just try moving - many things come to light including things you never knew or had forgotten. Good fun.

On to the topic of today's conversation...The Oscars

The Big Show
Did you happen to view the Oscars on Sunday evening?

Well, I had the best of intentions to speak with you prior to the big show - however, I recanted at the last minute with the realization that everyone and their brother had an opinion, prediction, comment, and thoughts about who should win what...

Having said, I decided to wait until AFTER the show to comment - why spoil the fun? It was complete Oscar overload leading up to the show: TV, Radio, Internet, and even the local news (At least here in L.A.). Coverage was complete saturation.

I need to immediately disclaim that I have not seen the films that were nominated by members of the Academy. Strangely, I am never compelled to see the films that are always in contention. The Reader - No, The Wrestler - No, Milk - No, Frost/Nixon - No, Doubt - No,Revolutionary Road - Nope...You get the idea.

Further, I enjoy action films (Will Smith and I share this in common) of which I refer to as,"Mindless Benders". I appreciate all films when on HBO (Of course), however I am doubly selective about which films that I would actually block time in the schedule to view in a movie theater - NOT MANY.

Although this comment could be taken completely out of context: Politico, docu-dramas, and bio pics just are not my immediate choice when actually paying (Well I do not actually personally) to spend time watching in a theater setting. For these movies are best when viewed at home and/or more casual setting. In other words, who needs to pay to think about social unrest and injustice? For this type of tumult and strife can be attained completely free just by watching the nightly news.

And The Oscar Goes To...
This year was one of the toughest leading list of contenders - with a number of deserved talent.

There were a few dramatic moments and here is really where the possibility of a clear and decisive winner became blurred:

  • Kate Winslet vs. Meryl Streep/ Best Female Actor (Winslet the victor)
  • Sean Penn vs. Mickey Rourke/ Best Male Actor (Penn captured the win)
  • The entire Best Film category (Slum Dog Millionaire)
  • Now about Slum Dog Millionaire: First, I really like anything with "Millionaire" in the title, however I am unsure as to what "Slum Dog" means; Snoop Dogg - yes, Slum Lord -okay...Anyway, it is great to see a foreign, independent film, without big names win a number of awards. For this victory speaks volumes to the community.

    Short and Sweet
Furthermore, although I did not view the entire telecast of the show (This morning), I completely missed the live dance off/ routine by gorgeous Hugh Jackman (YouTube will be my friend for the next few days) - not sure where I was or what I was doing during the number.

All around the show was an elegant presentation with a complimentary diversity of talent (Although my favorite still remains this year's Grammy Awards). Similar to many, I like things to move along briskly during these types of shows something to affect: Announce, present, thanks in this order and manner of pace and if I begin to wander (As in LEAVE), it's just not a good sign.

Now the Vanity Fair party had tons of good looking eye candy and celebrities - for that was the REAL event.

Next year should be equally as exciting and unless movies such as Watchmen, GI Joe, Fast & Furious are nominated - chances are the ceremony will be filled once again with films that I have not seen...

    Cheers!
