The Non-Review
As you may be aware, I do not actually review movies - as they say, "Those who review can't do", or as I like to say, "Have Not Done". I have never met a movie reviewer/critic who was an actual filmmaker or who even had actual film production experience - those who review films, have NO idea of the complexity involved in making a film.
Rather I prefer to simply to talk, and talk, and talk, and talk about what movies mean (Largely) and how they relate to personal events within my alleged (By others) exciting and fun-filled life (I am sure the same for you).
Anyway, according to box office numbers, the new Trek garnered just close to $80 million of your dollars this past weekend. Congratulations, you have once again initiated another sequel.
Engage!
Quite frankly, I have been excited about this new Trek since hearing the idea approximately 2 years prior.
My thought was, "Yeah, that sounds like a great idea", as that is how I feel about most. However, just as you, I have a history with this show, a familiar if you will.
I am an avid Trekker/Trekkie (Although not clearly obvious) at heart. Wait, wait, not as it pertains to attending Star Trek conventions wearing rubber ears, uniforms, reading novels, owning toy models, and posters. My affection is merely an interest in the Classic Trek (Never really got into the recent iterations of the TV show).
Trekker/Trekkies are very serious about their Star Trek lineage, characters, episodes, and story lines - Yeah, not so much on this side...
I have been viewing Star Trek re-runs since childhood and aside from my unduly fascination with space and time, Star Trek had personal meaning (Of course it helped that my dad largely resembled Spock and my mother largely resembled Uhura - this is a strange fact indeed), the show always presented an interesting "Social, Life Lesson" at the conclusion of each episode - or, so I would believe...
Classic Trek represented good storytelling in a 3-act structure (Beginning, middle, and end) and growing up, I was able to successfully write a number of stories as a result of the cult classic version.
Ultimately, I do not believe that a 'Social, Life Lesson' can be attained from an Action Movie (I dare the Screenwriter who can master a balance of sensible action and meaning). Why most Action movies in their very nature are violent and un-realistic diatribes of foray into the meaningless - Oops, I am getting side tracked again...Blasted Vulcan logic.
For It Is Not About The Past, It Is About The Future
Indeed I enjoy most mass movies that include loud action sequences, a young cast of un-named, senseless dialog and the ever present future that includes some type of military/martial presence - I expanded on my general 'All Action Movies Are The Same Movie' cliches within a previous post.
I have received a number of emails about the movie and most of the comments regarding the film have been positive reaction for the technology, the new look, and even the choice of cast.
No wait, it's a prequel to the sequel of the chronology in the 3rd installment of the Second Book
Having said, out of the concerns die-hard fans also commented on various perceived inconsistencies in the time line of the stories, events and characters.
However my general response to argument is that the movie was focused on the new beginning, rather than chronology of the past. Only Sci-Fi fans exacerbate themselves with such irrelevance of time lines in their movies - have you noticed? Well, forget about when it happened and simply enjoy the experience.
My final thought: Aside from Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan, I would extend this installment as one of my favorites and was not disappointed by this effort. For this appreciation is a great deal from Yours Truly.
