The Farmer Wants A Wife

Looking for love in the wrong places? Well, your new dating show has arrived, just in time! The CW is on the verge of offering you the latest in dating reality: Farmer Wants A Wife.

Now as you may be aware, the CW in my opinion just can't do anything wrong...With America's Next Top Model, that is...However, this is a new type of genre for the fledgling network.

The show (Created by American Idol producers, FremantleMedia North America) is a remake of the 2001 hit that ran in the U.K. and involves bachelorettes (The women) competing against each other to impress their potential suitor (The bachelor), while proving their ability to work on a farm.

When I had heard of this concept, my first reaction was "Okay, so it's The Bachelor, Beauty & The Geek set on a farm". Then it was explained as, "10 women fed up with big city dating will be introduced to a country fella' who promises them a simple life".

No Green Acres
I thought a-ha, I have got them now - First, anyone knows that farm living is NOT simple! Working on a farm is a 12 hour a day, 7 day a week job, without holidays or a nice 9-5 schedule. You cannot call in sick and there is certainly not vacation nor vacation pay, for that matter.
Having spent a great deal of my youth growing up in the country, I have first hand knowledge of farm life. Although we did not have animal livestock, we had acreage and an orchard. Believe me, it was hard work to maintain and there were endless after school chores - I have a little insight into what life would be like on a farm and it is not in any way glamorous.

Sometimes the obvious is not so obvious and after thinking further, this is what could make the show interesting. The concept is ripe with naivete as this will become the impetus as the 'city slickers' attempt to complete farm related challenges (Tractors and farm animals) - now that will be interesting.

Good Looking Farmer Seeks...
Many farmers and some not have already voiced concern over the intention and portrayal of farmers in a reality show, claiming that the producers may depict the farmer bachelors in a negative manner. However despite the concern, there were close to 70 bachelors who auditioned for the show in Lincoln, Nebraska last December. Who said love is rational, right?

Deborah Tarica, casting director with FremantleMedia said, "The show isn’t looking to exploit anyone, but give people a taste of farm life and “form some matches in the process.”

Sounds good...
