The Ted Williams Story

Unless you have been busy living under rock this past week, or never returned to modern civilization from the New Year holiday, you have more than likely heard or seen the story of now newly famous, Ted Williams.

Ted Williams (More commonly known as 'Golden Voice') recently careened into the national spotlight, after being discovered while pan-handling near a Columbus, Ohio freeway by a videographer from the local newspaper (Who somewhat inadvertently broke the story).

According to reports, the videographer had been driving to work and noticed then homeless, Williams standing road side holding a sign, "I have a GOD given gift of voice, I'm an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times. Please any help will be gratefully appreciated..."

Real Life Rags to Riches?
One could not help but feel inspired from such a fantastic story (As my good friend always laments, "Real Life Really Is Stranger Than Fiction"). Producers everywhere are clamoring for an interview, and more than likely someone has already purchased the rights to his story for a full-length feature film (Similar to The Pursuit of 'Happyness').

Moreover, Ted has received numerous offers from various corporate interests and media. Let's take inventory of the known/confirmed employment offers (Aside from the numerous monetary gestures of a generous few):

An offer of a full-time announcing job with Cleveland Cavaliers
Voice Over gig with Kraft Macaroni & Cheese
A gig with cable channel MSNBC's Lean Forward campaign (Thank you, TV Squad!)
New house (Mortgage paid by a loan company)
Numerous Websites dedicated to Williams
Numerous television appearances (CBS, NBC)

All of the recent media attention has brought into question a number of considerations of concern.

First, are said companies merely jumping on the 'Ted Williams Story' bandwagon simply for good PR, and would said companies even give the light of day to an average person (Meaning, those without a platform) who may have had similar run-ins with the law? Not certain there would have been the same gesture for the person on the street that is in desperate attempt to turn his/her life around.

Many Other 'Ted Williams Stories' Are Out There...
Personally, I have been involved with a number of causes and have been actively involved with my own brand of vigilant efforts to impact homelessness. Hearing this story was immediate reason to bring the issue of homeless back into the national spotlight and I would strongly recommend that Ted take up the cause (Once settled). As a former member of the community, he would have far greater impact than someone in the media (Yours Truly).

What's Your Talent?
More important, it returns the question of just how many other similar stories are out there? Every person homeless or not, certainly has a skill/talent or as Ted writes, "A GOD given gift of_______", it's just a matter of finding the right vehicle to exploit a possible opportunity, or in this case, a second chance.

I live in a town filled to the virtual brim with talent (And, often not) and each and every day, droves of the inspired aspire to being discovered for something that will translate into their, "Big Break".

The strange and unusual thing is that ANYONE can become famous - someone just needs to tell these people...

Million Dollar Pound Money Drop

Last week, Fox debuted a new game show franchise titled, "Million Dollar Money Drop", based on the British hit-show "Million Pound Money Drop".

According to recent statement by friends at Fox:

MILLION DOLLAR MONEY DROP, the ultimate high-stakes game show, created and produced by Endemol ("Deal or No Deal"), gives a couple $1 million in cold, hard cash and all they have to do to keep it is correctly answer seven multiple-choice questions.

The show is being called a suspense-thriller - love when movie descriptors are used for television game shows.

In rare fashion, I have indeed seen the second episode of the show in limited viewing (I commonly do not watch shows beyond the first episode). The idea is that during the show the couples work together to answer moderately difficult (To the non-Trivial Pursuit expert) multiple choice trivia questions.

The amount of money lost is determined according to the amount of the wager and whether or not the correct answer has been chosen. In a nutshell, one might even venture to say the concept is very similar to gambling...

My great business/production partner had a similar idea in 2005, prior to the development of the show - with the concept of being: Begin with the money and work your way backwards to keep.

Timing is Everything
At the moment, the show appears to be quite popular among viewers (Despite recent controversy over a couple's recent $800,000 alleged wrong answer about Post-It notes), I would strongly advise giving the couple another opportunity to appear on the show to preserve good will and PR for the show.

Further, credit to Fox for airing a new program during the holiday season of repeat and melancholy programming presented by most other networks. The strategy is clearly obvious as Fox will literally deliver favorable viewership to the new season of American Idol.

Having said, there are a few minor concerns about Million Dollar Money Drop...

First, the show airs in nightly rotation this week and if you may recall, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? was a previous program that had once also been in full rotation, however the show eventually met with over saturation.

Should this schedule continue, a question of whether or not game show serials can achieve longevity/stability (Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune) in a nightly prime-time slot remains to be determined.

The second concern is that the show is hosted by Kevin Pollack (Comedian, Web Host), and really, I am not 100% with this obscure choice of host - not a fan. Bottom line, keep the show, get rid of the host.

I would have much preferred a choice of host somewhere around the line of Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, 'Cash Cab' guy or even Ellen DeGeneres. As well, Dane Cook, who happens to be easy on the eyes, would have been a blast!

We'll see what happens...The show airs at 8PM on Fox.

The Hoff's Got Talent!

A&E has officially pulled the plug on The Hasselhoff’s reality television show, canceling after just two episodes.

“The Hasselhoffs” reality television show was centered on the former “Knight Rider” and “Baywatch” star with daughters, Hayley (18) and Taylor Ann (20), who were both trying to break into show business (More specifically, music).

According to friends, the fate of "The Hasselhoffs" had been determined on its first night when the second consecutive episode saw viewing figures drop from 718,000 to 505,000.

I was not able to view the initial, nor subsequent episode of the program, however are we beginning to notice a pattern of predictability?

A reality show premier has become similar to a movie premier, where in which the numbers (Viewership for TV, Box Office receipts for movies) must show clear signs of potential profit.

If recent history is an indication (Sarah Palin's Alaska/TLC), most reality programs typically receive high viewership for the initial episode, due to heavy promotion and marketing, only to quickly drop the following week.

The family filmed 10 episodes - with one showing their dog having therapy for tennis ball addiction. Execs had hoped it would match the success of fly-on-the-wall show The Osbournes but, according to sources, the remaining eight episodes will not be aired, until further notice.

First to admit, I have quite a fondness and think the world of David Hasselhoff (No, I'm not German). Hasselhoff never fails to present a high level of entertaining 'machismo' and often a shameless characterization of his brazen bravado (Frequently refers to himself in third person).

I grew up watching "Knight Rider" (More or less) and even occasionally enjoyed watching the show Baywatch - everyone has seen Baywatch at one point or another.

Having said, it is likely that 'The Hoff' knows something in which we are all unaware. After all, he has with stood the test of time spanning many decades of television: Knight Ridder, Baywatch, America's Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars, numerous music videos, a Roast, a drunken cheeseburger viral video, and a self-titled reality show.

By all intents and purposes, 'Hoff' has relished in a long-time music career throughout Europe (Particularly Germany - where Germans LOVE David Hasselhoff), and has a full schedule of concert tour dates.

Hello? 'The Hoff ' even has his own iPhone App - You know you've made it big when you have your own iPhone App and is active on Twitter.

One lesson to be learned from 'The Hoff' is that he does not take himself too seriously and has incredible interaction, appreciation for his fans - This could quite possibly be the secret to longevity in Hollywood stardom.

Recently I had the pleasure of being stuck in traffic right behind 'The Hoff', our vehicles were literally bumper-to-bumper for a good 40 minutes. I did not even have a chance to say "Hello" as I was on the phone in heavy negotiation...I slowed and waved upon passing his vehicle.

And, now for the good news...

The 58-year-old actor, who was once a judge on “America’s Got Talent”, will now be one of the esteemed judges on "Britain's Got Talent" - thus replacing Piers Morgan. It was announced in the spring of 2010 that Morgan would be the successor to the retiring Larry King (Larry King Live/CNN).

Go Hoff!

Sarah Palin's Alaska...Not

Last month, cable network TLC began airing a new show called, Sarah Palin's Alaska (Mark Burnett).

Release of the news that Palin would be starring in her own reality television show immediately invoked a high level of concern and disdain; more emphasis on the latter.

First a disclaimer, I will be first to admit that I have been to many places however, Alaska was never within my adventurous travels.

Upon hearing of the title, "Sarah Palin's Alaska", I had thought it could possibly be an educational topic that would provide insight into the ~~country~~, err largest state.

Really, I was looking forward to a narrated adventure that the entire family could enjoy with Track, Trig, Willow, Bristol and dreamer Mayoral candidate Levi. A real show - 1 hour special (max).

One would have remained somewhat optimistic...Until the words REALITY SHOW had been uttered within the descriptor. Without saying too much, anytime you hear or read the words 'Reality Show' just be aware that said show is anything but real.

Instead, many were greeted with multiple episodes of the usual Sarah Palin rhetoric - placing into question the validity of reality television, once again. By mention of rhetoric, I am referring to the numerous incidences throughout the show in which Palin relates everything back to her and her political views.

After watching half of the first episode, I concluded that Alaskans are conflicted and have an avowed love of nature (Well, maybe not sure exactly how hunting wild animals is considered a love of nature) through which somehow relates everyday life as a rugged experience that includes the existence of rifles, grueling activities, extreme weather, and nosy neighbors all of which naturally equate to politics? Forget progressive, modern ideas and technology - this is 1800!!

Further contemplation, I am convinced that Palin (Who has managed to receive a reality show, of all possible wonders), really does enjoy being in the spotlight after all, despite previous complaints of media intrusion into her person life and her publicly expressed dislike for 'Hollywood' in general. Incidentally, to Palin, 'The Media = Hollywood'.

Moreover, I was under the distinct impression that Palin was actually going to move to Los Angeles and begin pursuit of an acting career due to her numerous and never ending appearances on television. For someone who claimed the media was intruding in her life, it appears as if Palin has chosen to spend her life intruding on the media!

The circumstance reminds of the game that children play, "Wanna know a secret?" - "What's the secret?" - "I can't tell...". You get the idea...

Fascinating? Not So Much...

Earlier this week, Barbara Walters announced her list of, "10 Most Fascinating People of 2010" for her upcoming 18th season special on ABC.

Ha, well straight away the title becomes subjective. According to Ms. Walters her list of the "10 Most Fascinating People of 2010" includes:

Justin Bieber (Understandable), Betty White (Good), Jennifer Lopez (This is beginning to not look good), former Alaska Governor and losing Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin (Too bad Russia wasn't available), the ENTIRE cast of MTV's The Jersey Shore (The weird looking orange kids that live in New Jersey), and a few others.

From what we know of the up-coming show, Walters sits down with Betty White to cover the topic of her newly renewed fame, sex life, and her overall success during the year. The interview with Palin discusses her "Trig and Track" and most likely a host of other uncommonly named family members (Ah, there I go again saying too much).

Now then, I really admire Ms. Walters from the position of accomplished Journalist. However, I am not able to understand a word she speaks - for some unknown reason, the audio simply reverberates as 'Charlie Brown's teacher' speak.

Upon watching Ms. Walters on television, I often smile as I gleefully flashback to thoughts of the Charlie Brown Christmas Special - help me should I ever meet Ms. Walters in person, as I am sure that I will rescind in profuse uncontrollable tittering.

Really, the people whom I might consider to be moderately fascinating "10 Most Fascinating People of 2010", would look something like the following list:

Gwyneth Paltrow (Obviously fascinating as a Country Singer), Ian Sommerhalder (Hot bad boy on Hot show), Betty White (Without saying), Cee-Lo, Katie Perry & Russell Brand, and Kris Jenner (Kim K's mother).

Alas, what would be more fun would be to have a show featuring the "10 Most Not Really All That Fascinating People of 2010" - or - "10 Most What Could Be Fascinating To Someone Somewhere People of 2010". Why of course, this list is practically writing itself as we speak, but moreover, a show of this comedic caliber would provide hours of hilarity and entertainment. Ms. Walters, should you decide to "Change up", I'm all too happy to help...

Meet Your New American Idol Team

Fox and 19 Entertainment released their 'Dream Team' line-up of judges for the 2011 season of American Idol. After weeks of speculation they (Fox and co.) have emerged with Randy Jackson, Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler, and Jennifer "Jenny from the block" Lopez.

Many have already expressed substantial disappointment with the lack of qualified selections - depending upon whom you ask what the word "Qualified" implies...

After all, Randy Jackson has been known throughout the music industry for _______, Steven Tyler has been fronting Aerosmith for 5,000 years and Jennifer Lopez (Not known for friendly) has not had a hit in 10 years...Yeah, we are still just a little cantankerous about Paula not being re-signed.

Further, it was suggested (By me, of course) that Randy should have been relieved of duty, however besides Ryan Seacrest, may be a friendly familiar 'Dawg'. Having said, it is hopeful that Randy has more to contribute other than precursory feedback.

Salaries for the group have been a reported $8 million for Randy, $11 million for Jennifer Lopez and $15 million for Ryan Seacrest (Most likely due to cross promotion on E!, radio show, et al).

Meanwhile, I would like to remain positive about the future of the show, but am finding it difficult to exude enthusiasm. Many have also said that American Idol should have finished it's run with a little grace and dignity (No such luck). Prepare the shark to be jumped in 5, 4, 3, 2...

Inception is The Exception

Box office numbers for this past weekend of July 30 through August 1 indicate that Inception continues to enjoy a third weekend at the top.
Dropping a mere 36% from the previous weekend, the Christopher Nolan film inched closer to breaking $200 million and will undoubtedly meet the expectations.

Where is Keanu Reeves when you need a good Sci-Fi bender?

Talk is already circulating that Nolan should just receive the Oscar now...

Last week it was announced that Ellen DeGeneres would be leaving the beleagured “American Idol.”

As of late, rumors circulating that the network was looking to shake-up the Idol format and that they may even re-vamp all of the current judges and bring back original producer, Nigel Lythgoe - All mere speculation.

DeGeneres released a statement today regarding what she claims was her decision. “A couple months ago, I let Fox and the ‘American Idol’ producers know that this didn’t feel like the right fit for me,” DeGeneres told the press. We tend to agree - but, the good news is that we have new found respect for DeGeneres for a great effort, despite the critics.

Really, we think Ellen would have been better suited as judge on "So You Think You Can Dance". Just sayin'...

Impressive Opening Week for Teen Love Triangle Movie Twilight Saga: Eclipse

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" is waning at the box office but still has gotten off to a blockbuster start with $161 million in its first five days.

The third chapter in the vampire romance fell off sharply after debuting last week with $68.5 million.

The good news is that was the second-best opening-day haul ever, behind its predecessor, last year's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which opened with $72.7 million.

Less than six months after Jay Leno returned to hosting The Tonight Show, the show's ratings are the lowest they've been since 1992, Variety reports.

In the second quarter of this year, the average total audience declined from 5 million viewers last year to 4 million viewers. This time last year featured a number of high-profile episodes, including an interview with President Barack Obama, Leno's final night and Conan O'Brien's debut as host.

Its official, Larry King is stepping down from his talk show after 25 years on the air with CNN

“After 25 years," Larry stated that he has decided to take a step back from the nightly grind and wants to take some time for himself and his family. So King will end his run with ‘Larry King Live’ on his own terms, sometime this fall.

To mention, I also began in Radio and definitely have a soft spot for the old time Broadcasters. However, the show is well over due for some new (Younger) talent to revitalize the program and really, make the show relevant once again in a very competitive, fast moving Cable News environment.

Moreover, CNN the entire network needs a complete re-branding strategy and a major overhaul - surely a tremendous task for the marketing department.

America's Got Viewers...

“America’s Got Talent” helped NBC take Wednesday night last week, it also took the coveted 18-49 demographic by a slim margin over FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Although the show is experiencing notable ratings, really, the show has not been the same since the departure of David Hasselhoff.

"Hoff" was the over-the-top personality that show and audience members had grown to know and love. Howie is a great guy (Despite being an unrelenting acclaimed germaphobe), but something about the show is simply remiss.

We are not big fans of boy host Nick Cannon and would have preferred someone as host a little more mature and experienced. Further, it is not necessary to constantly 'plug' Mariah Carey's music every season. Please, a little more tact would be appreciated here...

Cleopatra or Tomb Raider?

Late last week it was announced the new film Cleopatra is currently in development for Angelina Jolie. According to producer Scott Rudin the film is based on the biography: "Cleopatra: A Life".

Well, the good news is that the role of Cleopatra was already written according to history, so this effort is not within creative original thought, but a talented writer could frame a modern version.

Although Angelina was previously Tomb Raider Lara Croft, and super-agent Evelyn Salt soon to be released Salt, she was also previously Queen Olympias in the Oliver Stone's version of Alexander (2004).

Speaking of Tomb Raider
We have been informed that socialite Kim Kardashian is in being considered for the film's lead character Lara Croft (Of course, this could be a convenient non-story).

Having said, we like Kim K just fine....

Moreover, we would like to imagine her in the role (Definitely better than Megan Fox), BUT everything is just too much with Kim (Makeup, hair, derriere, cleavage, media coverage, sex tapes, too much information, etc). It's a desperate condition that we have repeatedly witnessed called the, "Look at me, Look at me" syndrome.

After all of her browbeating constant selling of her "Carefully manufactured over-sexualized shtick" it's difficult to imagine Kardashian in a serious role. Alright, let's try a different choice for the role.

In Box Office News It's All Karate Chop...

The Karate Kid has Won an 80s Style Showdown at The Weekend Box Office over The A-Team.

Sony's insta-remake of 1984's "The Karate Kid" debuted at No. 1 for the weekend garnering a take of $56 million, according to studio estimates. The big-screen adaptation of the 1980s TV series "The A-Team" came in at less than half that, the 20th Century Fox release opening in second place with just over $25 million.

Little Jaden Smith and eyebrows are adorable. Long-term acting ability remains to be seen, but ol' dad Will always had a reliable smug and a smart a** one liner ready (No matter the movie) - let's see if there is a flow of similarity between father and son.

However, we had more of an A-Team feel going on this weekend. After all, the A-Team had action - Big Action - loud and elaborate set pieces, and Bradley Cooper without a shirt (Just what most guys want to see). (Photo/Associated Press)

In Glee News...

Last Week's Season Ending Episode Viewed By Just Under 11 Million People, The Series Largest Audience

Admittedly, despite revitalizing old tunes and inspiring Broadway, our zest for 'Glee' has waned considerably - In fact, the season ending episode was the ONLY episode we actually viewed this year.

Perhaps maybe it was all of the DVD watching of the show's previous seasons. Maybe it is because we tire of the same story told over, and over, and over (Note to Ryan Murphy). Maybe we are just burned out on all of the over exposure (Too popular now). Really, everyone and their brother literally hopes to be on the show now - We say a little too late.

Unpack Your Knives!

The Next Food Network Star returned to some big changes on Sunday for season 6 including the addition of Giada De Laurentiis as a mentor and a spectacular move to Los Angeles.

“We’re using Giada as a mentor figure, where she talks about her experiences being a host on a network, and that’s one more element we didn’t have before", said Co-host Bobby Flay.

Quite frankly, I once overheard a couple in the grocery store bantering the ingredients of one of Giada's recipes (Apparently, they had watched her show and were attempting to make whatever dish that was prepared on television). My immediate thought was...Well, never mind what my initial thought was at the time...Let's just say that I was on the verge of laughing at them in public.

Anyway, back to the show. I appreciate the lively tempo of the new format (Moving to L.A. was an obvious good decision) and a change-up in host/judges also certainly helps to enliven what was once viewed as a very dry program.

I would change a few other things about the show, as well - such as stocking the entire panel with Food Network stars (Why have only one on the panel?), appoint Guy Fieri as host (Agreed, his looks are distracting, but he does bring personality), and completely, unequivocally change the set. Moreover, there are a number of things that I would overhaul about the ENTIRE network - but, that is a discussion for another time (Remind me later).

With the latest season, the show appears to be patterning after Bravo's ultra successful cook-off program Top Chef, which might not be a bad idea...

Your New American Idol

Official Update: Lee Dewyze (dee-wise) Wins The Title of American Idol On The Show's 9th Season.

Congratulations to Lee D. (Although, we were really hoping for Crystal B.), we can accept the fact that the public chose Lee.

Really, Crystal had a very unique style and identifiable sound. Having said, we barely remember anything about Lee's performances (Except something about Hallelujah - song chosen by Simon).

Funny thing about American Idol is that not only have more recent season winners been male and according to @LyndseyParker of Yahoo!, Lee had to win because there is a good ol' boys club transpiring at AI. Possibly true.

We noticed that something else is also transpiring: Homogenization. Meaning, all of the recent winners are more or less the same variation of a version and have miraculously overcome the much more popular, and compelling adversaries. For example, last season's Kris Allen vs. Adam Lambert. Adam was far more individual, visually interesting, and entertaining, as exhibited through his undeniable on stage presence. Kris was barely memorable, nor particularly likable.

The American Formula
We would like to believe that unlike the Miss USA Pageant, in which Donald Trump chooses the winner (Allegedly), that Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller do not choose the winner of American Idol, based whom they feel would have a broader appeal for Sony's A&R, and truly determined by the vote of the people (Despite reported voting discrepancies).

In an industry where individuality is desperately needed (Thank you, Lady Gaga), it is rather dubious that all strangely appears to remain the same.

Ah, but perhaps there is another 'undertow' at work. I submit for your review this conclusion: In past season's of AI, the runner up has always managed to become successful - strangely more than the actual winner...It is possible this could be a pre-determined consequence. Although there was a clear winner announced on the show, the public will ultimately buy the records of the runner up contestant. Ha, we indeed have the REAL winner!

This week there are a number of shows that will be A) Ending their season or B) Ending their life on network television.

First, a few shows have already ended their season:

1. America's Next Top Model: Krista White was named America's Next Top Model. Quite honestly Krista was the most interesting in appearance and personality - happy to hear that she won.

2. Celebrity Apprentice: Brett Michaels was announced the hired Celebrity Apprentice. We are thrilled that Brett won - he's a great guy all around. Now then, we do want to see Brett without all of the makeup, hair extensions, bandannas, fake tan, and all of that Arizona man jewelry.

Now, for the shows that have ended their life (Really, it's about time):

1. 24 (Fox)
2. Lost (ABC)
3. Law & Order (Dick Wolfe)

Meanwhile and speaking of Scripted Drama, the latest installment of The Bachelorette (ABC) began this week (Sort of) and so far, we can say that this season's offerings (The men) are somewhat generic and unappealing (Not as cute as Jake).

Where are the models on this fake dating show?! Also, on a special note to the casting department: Where is the diversity - very disappointing.

There She Is...Miss America

Last week, Rima Fakih was crowned the new Miss America.

Fakih, 24, a former New Yorker was raised in Dearborn, Mich. She left 50 contestants behind, including runner-up Miss Oklahoma, for the coveted title.

Wonderful and refreshing news for this gorgeous beauty! We happened to have viewed portions of the program and noticed a few oddities. Particularly the Trump kind...

Trump's business partner (Co-owner of the pageant) was a judge, as was Trump's wife Melania (40) was also a judge, emcee Curtis Stone was a contestant on Trump's Apprentice, Trump's name was dropped numerous times throughout the telecast and even the announcer of the program was Trump himself - you get where we are going with this? Next, the 63-year old Trump will even add co-hearse his name to the title, "Donald Trump's Miss America Pageant". This is professional level 'Brand-Ram' and at this perspective, it's really an illness ripe for rehab.

We spoke with a former 'Pageant Authority and Insider Personality' and have been informed that Trump himself allegedly selects the winner of the pageant. If true, no surprise. Further, this year's selected winner happens to be of Arab-American descent. For this fact, makes not a difference to us...However, the Trump motive could have a more self-serving purpose. Of course, the purpose is not to impart good will between the countries, but we speculate that perhaps more because of Trump's project in Dubai. Ah, time to sell some condos...

Can You Smell What The Rock Is Cooking?

The Rock will co-star in the 5th installment in the "Fast & Furious" franchise with Vin Diesel -both will find their need for "Faster" speed on the same screen.

When we first mentioned this breaking story to Val, we received not a reaction - she simply graced us with a big, gorgeous smile and walked away. Either this was really good news or she has already floated away blissfully in some heavenly ether over the thought of her favorite action star Vin Diesel (Who once complimented her on her fabulous smile) and The Rock, together in the same movie...Translation: If you want anything - now's a very GOOD time to ask.

Anyway, the new storyline for FF5 is about an ex-con who sets out to avenge his brother’s death after they were double-crossed during a heist years ago. During his campaign, however, he’s tracked by a veteran cop and an egocentric hit man.

“Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon has been summoned to host the 62nd Prime time Emmy Awards (NBC)

Reportedly, Fallon (35) won out over fellow “SNL”-alum Amy Poehler, who also stars on an NBC series, “Parks and Recreation.” It was also rumored that Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake (Yeah, that choice would have been majorly lame) were in the running, thanks to their moderately silly, bathroom humor “SNL" skein.

Counting current gig, this will be Fallon’s fourth big hosting gig, as he also hosted the 2001 and 2005 MTV Movie Awards and the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.

Lady Gaga recently roiled over edited American Idol appearance

A few weeks prior, Lady Gaga (Guhguh as Larry King calls her...I say, Googoo) appeared on the hit show American Idol for 'live' performance in front of the studio audience. Well, apparently, Ms. GaGa felt the footage was too 'Edited' using the terms "Fox Poorly + Amateurly (Not an actual word) edited + cut her performance..."

First, EVERYTHING on television is edited. The reasons for such are rather obvious: The Clock.

Second, I am wondering if Ms. Gg actually viewed the performance as a number have commented that the performance was A) Too long and B) Too boring. Really, Ms. Gg should be pleased that the performance was cut short and edited well within the time constraints - the point of her performance was illustrated and the promotion/commotion should generate plenty 'o ticket sales for the real, LIVE concert. Last Week 88-year-old Betty White made her much anticipated debut as host of Saturday Night Live (NBC) and thanks to Facebook fans, there was no disappointment.

Which proves my point, 'Hey Networks, Social Media rules!' - They were laughing at one point about all of this Social Media 'stuff' - NOW who's laughing, baby!

Some of the highlights of the episode included a death metal version of the Golden Girls theme-song (Liked it), Betty’s role as a muffin chef on NPR, and her ability to have fun with her age, even getting a little raunchy at times (A little uncomfortable)

Looking for something to do this summer?

After this past weekend's franchise blockbuster Iron Man 2 earning a mere $130 million at the domestic box office (In addition to the $100 million plus earned the previous weekend overseas) - we are now something like $250 million total in 2 weeks. We have officially began the summer movie season.

Albeit, without affable Will Smith, who may more than likely return to his throne of "King of the Summer Blockbuster Movies" via Men In Black 3 or even perhaps in 'brilliant' alien agenda disaster flick, Independence Day 2.

Moreover, I usually enjoy posting my annual guide to the summer movie season, 'Valerie St. John's Annual Guide to the Summer Movie Season' - catchy title, yes? More important and not to disappoint, we will have yet another published version to host your 2010 viewing.

The Return of The Iron...

Iron Man 2 has already cleared $100 million overseas.

The GOOD news, I have only viewed the trailer. Now the possible bad news, there appeared to be way too much going on with the story...If this is possible with a Comic Book movie...

Quite frankly, if there are more than one or two "Name Talent Above The Line", I get nervous - immediate images of an over-inflated budget due to too many plots, stunts, sub plots, story lines, and characters written into the movie for the benefit of having said name(s) in the picture, as an ensemble cast, is a great reason of moderate concern.

Let's take Talent roll call: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Sam Jackson (My favorite), Don Cheadle (Who replaces creepy Terrance Howard), and Sam Rockwell (Another favorite).

Now, supplement with excessive gratuitous explosions, loud music, snarky dialog, over the top irreverence, advanced weaponry (My favorite subject), military presence, a bad guy (Preferably foreign with accent), a $100 million dollar production budget and you have yourself a summer initiating blockbuster. Simple.

Let's hope for the best...

The film is scheduled to debut in North America on Friday. A Nightmare on Elm Street grabbed the latest No. 1 domestic box office spot last weekend with $32.2 million (Congratulations, there will be a NOES Part 4).

After Months of Waiting, former The Tonight Show host Conan O'Brien Opens Up About The NBC Debacle.

In a recent interview, O'Brien told 60 Minutes that he decided to leave NBC because the "relationship" was clearly "toxic."

First, break-ups are always uncomfortable and as one reader stated, "Coco now has the opportunity to move away from the D-Bags". Well said. However, remember that everything is a business proposition and according to NBC (Jeff Zucker), The Tonight Show was allegedly losing money (Although presumably, Jay Leno at 9 PM was THE biggest money loser).

The business decision was made somewhere along the lofty ranks of NBC to reduce The Tonight Show by 30 minutes and return Leno back to the original time slot. Sounded like a great plan to CYA. Only one slight inconvenience - Mr. O'Brien did not go along with said plan. As luck would have it, Leno was aptly available to ~~back stab~~ replace or as he termed in a recent interview, "...Both got screwed".

Right, who would guess these days, "...Got screwed" means once again getting your own show after miserably failing from another in a curious programming experiment that created such a contentious environment that forced someone else out of their job/livelihood? Ah, life is good.

Idol Gave Back...

The Annual American Idol Gives Back Show Aired Last Week, Hoping to Raise $45 Million for Charity...

My immediate question was, "Which Charity"? While I appreciate the premise of the program - a televised telethon and Jerry Lewis has been presenting a star filled show for the Muscular Dystrophy Association with tremendous success for years. Why shouldn't a popular television program do the same?
Ah, but this is where the story begins to defy reasonability - Despite the ambiguous and unmentioned specifics during the show (Mosquito Nets will stop the spread of Malaria - Well, how about a vaccine?!), the program felt largely contrite and slightly disingenuous instead of warm and fuzzy.

The performances, pace, arrangements and special celebrity and guest appearances were indeed impressive. However after an extended viewing, the show began to feel more like a brow beating late-night infomercial. The spin: Corporate sponsors and special interests thinly veiled to appear acting in the interest of charity (Phone company says, "Text your donation to...").

Working Reality Mom of 8 Kate Gosselin was finally voted off of Dancing With The Stars last week.

Kate was sent to the bottom two at the beginning of the show and was subsequently voted off. She proceeded to get teary-eyed when Tom Bergeron announced she would be leaving. “I need a minute,” she said through her tears.

Really, Kate was arguably the mot interesting contestant this season, perhaps even out of any season, the ratings are noticeably in slight decline from the previous week - You Love Kate Gosselin - Who doesn't . The End of Life?

Discovery Channel debuted this season a new stunning miniseries called, "Life".

First, not Life as in YOUR Life, but the Life that transpires around you while you are living your Life. If you’ve seen Planet Earth then you’ll probably enjoy this even more. While Planet Earth focused more on the global effects and events, Life explores further into nature, focusing more on the wildlife (Narrated by Oprah Winfrey).

Although the series has completed it's 'first run', we suggest that if you have a chance - we highly recommend that you catch this breathtaking and amazing series.

Really, the show should be a mandatory requirement in the curriculum for every Earth Science class!

The Glee Is Over...

Only one problem - I'm burned out already on the show and we're only at the 2nd episode. According to Steve Cheskin (EVP of Programming for TLC), “Yes we are developing a new show with Kate,” he said.

The show is tentatively titled, “Twist of Kate”, and will reportedly feature Kate answering questions from readers who have been inspired by her story and her life as a single mom with 8 kids. Welcome to your niche market, Kate. Next, a Kate inspired line of products, books, and clothing for single moms (Oops, we say too much).

Ever since Kate dumped the short, pudgy bald guy, we've admired this woman. However, we're not sure the best format for this type of show (Documentary, Docu Soap, Talk) - and, we are the experts...At this point, we vote for 2-hour special, because really how many questions could there possibly be left to answer about Kate that we have not already heard, read, and seen on the TV, Radio, Web and Tabloids over the past year and a half??

Tina Fey returned to Saturday Night Live last week garnering record ratings. Fey brought her famous Sarah Palin impression as well as tween heartthrob, Justin Bieber.

According to those who actually watched, Palin played her famous Palin routine, a Palin-esque black leather jacket, and an American flag pin, to tout a fake Sarah Palin Network. The networks programs included “Tea Party Wheel of Fortune”, “Are you Smarter Than a Half-Term Governor”, “Dateline: To Catch a Levi Johnston”, and “Hey Journalist, I Gotcha!”, which used re-edited news footage to show Palin outsmarting Katie Couric.

Oh No! Has it been 6-weeks already? Former Late Night Show/The Jay Leno Show Band Master Kevin Eubanks has confirmed that after 18 years (Really?), he's ready for a change and will be leaving in May.

Meanwhile....
Although publicly banned from being funny (?), Conan O'Brien is bringing his late-night act to Time Warner-owned cable network TBS, breaking off talks with Fox and making plans to move to cable in November. Allegedly, the show will be opposite of Jay Leno's Late-Night time slot....Let the Games Begin!

Dear Sandra Bullock,

First, it is quite rare that we actually write about Celebrities (Unless it's somehow related to Television and/or Film), but in light of recent events, we felt compelled to blog this Open Letter to you.

We realize that you are busy with other matters and considering that you are the current, "America's Sweetheart" - which strangely appears to be common yore for every female film actress (Once title of Julia Roberts, Renee Zellweger, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon), who produces real "Chops" in a role. Strangely, male actors are never given names such as "America's Sweetheart". Ah, we're beginning to babble...

Anyway, the point that we are desperately hoping to make (If it could be considered one) is that we have been baffled and perplexed from the beginning as to "Why" - no, really. Why? As Don Trump once publicly said, he could never understand what you ever saw - We agree, but love is a 'funny' unpredictable thing that makes us do 'funny' unpredictable things.

Alright, once you have taken out the 'Trash' - we wish for you to think of happier times - you know, like the ones in your movies. Having said, we know that movies are not real (Of course), but in our version of reality, we always imagined you with the following leading men (All Co-Stars at one point):

Keanu Reeves (Not only Val's favorite, but we feel he is perfect for you).
Ryan Reynolds (Well, this list was compiled PRIOR to his marriage to Scarlett Johansson).
Benjamin Bratt (Good looking, again, before he was married).
Hugh Grant (Last checked, he is STILL available - minus hookers, oops 'Dates').
Ben Affleck (Before the obvious).

Our best 2-cents: Spend an afternoon watching your movies (Don't feel funny about it, our buddy Tom Cruise spends much of his time watching his movies, as well...We've been told).

So, in conclusion we agree, there is currently a ridiculously dire shortage of Good Looking, Single, [Straight], Secure, Mature men over the age of 30 in this town (Indeed a wicked conspiracy)...But, keep looking up because in a few weeks, the Tabs will feature you on the cover dating a new young hottie (Whom you don't even know, nor perhaps maybe might not even have met)...So, if you ask us that's not a bad way to rebound. You Go Girl!

Last week, Jay Leno sat down with Joy Behar (The View, The Joy Behar Show) on The Tonight Show.

In a brief backstage pre-show interview, Leno claims both he & Conan O’Brien “got screwed” by the NBC. Leno added, “Conan was treated terribly and he was also treated terribly and they had to make a decision.” This statement arrives long AFTER the now since forgotten late night debacle in which Leno was reinstated as host of The Tonight Show when his prime time gig, The Jay Leno Show, failed.

Our best advice, get rid of Jay's contract (Which at this point would be null and void - but, we're not lawyers) and hire Rosie O'Donnell - to be clear, not fans, but this IS a business of ratings and s/he who has the most wins...Next!

Kirstie Alley Brings Her Big Plight Back To Television In A New Reality Series...

Sources tell us that Alley’s new series“Kirstie Alley’s Big Life” on A&E was originally pitched as a "Biggest Loser" style weight loss show, but is now rather Alley herself.

We are big fans of A&E and had an opportunity to watch one of the initial episodes and found it funny/entertaining. Kirstie has always appeared to be self-driven and this new series certainly presents a more vulnerable, human side of the actress with her on-going personal battle (Ego included) of her weight. Well, remember Kirstie's appearance in a bathing suit on Oprah a few years back?

Although we are definitely down with a woman trying to look and be her best, we would really like to feel as if Alley's efforts are sincere and genuine (We unfollowed @kirstiealley on Twitter), but heard something about her launching a weight loss program (ala Jillian Michaels style -we unfollowed @jillianmichaels as well) similar to Jenny Craig - an endeavor that she has been working on over the past 2 years since leaving as JC spokesperson.

Movie Critic Roger Ebert Shopping New Movie Review Show

“We [Ebert & Wife] believe a market still exists for a weekly show where a couple of critics review new movies,” wrote the longtime Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert on his blog.

In Film school my professor would say, "Those who can't do, review". I would LOVE to see a former Movie Director (Successful) as a critic and voice of experience. Many decisions are driven by economics and financial obligation, not necessarily because of cohesion of a story line.

Moreover, would I want to listen to someone's over analysis of Alien vs. Predator? Depends. I tend to appreciate reviews made by FRIENDS, not so much opinions offered by critics (Which never seem to harmoniously coincide with the general population of movie audiences).

So, if there were indeed to be another film-review show on TV, I might suggest a few concessions (The last show was a little more for the 50 year plus crowd), but we have followed and subsequently unfollowed @ebertchicago once or twice...There was brief mention of this idea, but who is really taking updates on Twitter seriously?

Nickelodeon's 23rd Annual Kid’s Choice Awards (KCAs) took place at UCLA last week

Although, Favorite Movie Actress Sandra Bullock was 'busy dealing with scumbag matters', the two "Taylors" were definitely in the house, and well that’s all that really mattered to this group.

Nick handed out 19 orange blimps and a few trademark buckets o' slime during the 23rd annual awards ceremony (Katie Perry's slime fest was hilarious!).

Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift each took home two of the coveted prizes. Lautner (along with Kristen Stewart) took home the Cutest Couple Award, along with the prize for Favorite Movie Actor.

The Alaskan Drama That Will Not Freeze Over...

Well, it appears as if borderline disgraced ex-governor Hollywood star wannabe Sarah Palin's ex son in law, daughter baby daddy (We're exhausted just from the lead-in), Levi Johnston is shopping his own version of reality around town.

Johnston's move is in light of recent sale of Sarah Palin's new reality show (Discovery/TLC). Although the purpose of the show remains unclear - Something about Bromances up north?

I have a few better ideas 1) ALASKA: Drama On The Ice Tundra (A show worthy of Discovery, Palin/Johnston Et al not required, narrated by Morgan Freeman). 2) KODIAK: The new version of the long running 80's Prime-Time Soap, Dallas (Starring Palin as Political Matriarch and Johnston as the conniving son in-law). 3) Politics of Love: A new version Reality Dating show that features Johnston and a bevy of beauties vying for his affection while completing tasks in wilds of Alaska (Think The Apprentice meets Survivor, The Amazing Race, The Bachelor, Joe Millionaire and Rock of Love all in the same show)...

The "show" is The CW’s newest reality show that follows five female flight attendants who also happen to be roommates at “the crash pad” in Los Angeles working and living together.

First, this mindless bender (Better known as a 44 minute ad for Virgin America - guess minority share owner Branson's Reality Apprentice knock-off (The Rebel Billionaire) did not work, so time to try a different approach that might make us (As in Virgin America) look hip) is not to be confused with the PBS historical feature, American Experience: Fly Girls, nor the classic Fly Girls dance group once featured on the 90's hit show, In Living Color.

Ha, but the show does have something in common with the before mentioned as it also appears to be a familiar Blast from The Past (As in tired), filled with throw back cliche even right down to the 90's moniker title "Fly" (Seriously, who in modern society uses the word 'Fly' in conversation anymore?!).

Critics and views have already lambasted the show stating that it is chock full of the stereotypical characters (The Schemer, The Mature, The Sassy, The Cornfed, and the Airhead) doing stereotypical things in stereotypical situations. Straight out of the reality show characture playbook. We say, tired, tired, tired...Buh Bye.

A couple weeks ago Craig Ferguson taped an entire episode of The Late Show (Charlie Rose) without an actual audience.

According to friends, there are 100 seats - 10 are reserved for house guests and 30 - 40 are available through requests for tickets. The remaining seats (50-60), are each paid for by the show (At $20 per hour, per person - more later). So, why not save $1,000 bucks an hour and just get rid of the audience, right? Brilliant!

Well, without giving away ALL of the secrets, but maybe some: When I had first moved to L.A., I had seen numerous ads for "Paid Audience" jobs; News Flash: There are entire agencies dedicated to just filling seats for every conceivable show that tapes live in front of a Studio audience.

The requirements were simple (ID and just show up for 8-10 hours at the designated studio *conveniently* located in Burbank). The job simple enough, sit and watch the show as part of a studio audience - for $8 per hour ($20 studio pay per hour, $12 to agency and $8 to you!) - that sounded like a fun temp job. Only issue, I began working - so, the idea was immediately nixed. I do have friends that went through the experience (More on that later, too).

Anyway, in the spirit of saving show budget, maybe I would recommend investing in a high-quality laugh track, a licensed copy of Final Cut Pro, and the latest version of Adobe After Effects...Ah, maybe even a low tech approach using mannequins wearing wigs for the over the shoulder shots and the quick sweeping pans of the 'Fake' audience - Alright, I'm done...

Minute to What?

New Game Show, Minute to Win It debuted last week on NBC. Former Food Network personality Guy Fieri hosts contestants who perform questionably simple, but moderately difficult, tasks within one minute.

First, um no, that's not Val's voice heard during the competitions. Secondly, we are not super fans of Guy Fieri (Don't know why, but many have said that maybe it's the personality or his oddly distracting appearance -?). According to some, Minute is an 'Americanized' similar format of British Game Show, The Cube (Dropped by Fox) and even replicated down to similar terminology used during the game.

Nonetheless, tasks during the show (A few of which are posted on the NBC site for prior practice) often include knocking things over or stacking things for the 'Money Prize Ladder'. Hey, remember when Game Shows used to give out actual non-cash prizes (Ala Wheel of Fortune - shop for products (aka Prizes) provided by Sponsors)? Ah, those were the days...

At 88, Betty White might just be having her best year ever.

With a 65 year career in the Entertainment biz, Betty White has definitely become Hollywood’s renewed interest and now she’s even been booked to appear on Saturday Night Live (Thanks to a roaring Facebook campaign) and has now landed a new gig, Hot In Cleveland (TV Land).

Friends at NBC for the SNL said that White signed on a couple of weeks ago. Reportedly, right now, the plan is for former SNL star Molly Shannon will host the show with White in May.

The cast of Glee met with 2000 fans (No, we were not there...) last weekend, during the closing night of the PaleyFest in Beverly Hills.

Not only did fans get to participate in some casual Q & A, they also got a sneak peek at “Hello,” the next episode set to air April 13 on Fox.

Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck), the show’s creator said that Puck and Rachel will reunite.”Yes, they will get back together. But the great thing about Puck is he’s a bad boy, so he has an affair with almost every girl on the show.” (*Sigh*)

Love Glee. But, rather than the same old down trodden misogynistic cliche story lines that you see via Nip/Tuck, let's mix-it-up a bit and have a few uplifting story lines about Mercedes (Amber Riley), or Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) where the female character finally triumphs - characters that are long overdue for exploration (Aside from Tina's fake stutter episode)...

Dancing with the Stars (ABC) has a new co-host but its not much of a surprise.

Brooke Burke, who previously appeared on the show as a contestant, has officially been named the new co-host of Dancing With The Stars (Burke is taking over Samantha Harris’ role on the competition series’ 10th season).

We like Brooke, although we had unfollow @BrookeBurke on Twitter because it was always "Mommy time" and never about the show...We try to stay focused.

According to the numbers, an average of 41.3 million viewers watched Sunday’s broadcast from the Kodak Theater (More than last year’s 36.3 million).

The new series will follow the Domestic Queen and a cast of other home and lifestyle experts as they help ordinary people tackle difficult tasks at home and in the workplace.

Many people tuned in over the last two weeks to watch the Olympics in Vancouver....But...

Coverage? What Coverage? If you were looking around to find live coverage of the Olympics, you would have noticed that many people were disgusted with NBC’s non-live coverage. Well, we noticed this little inconvenience two years prior when the Olympics were live from Bejing, China. Absolutely, ridiculously controlled and the coverage of the games were relegated to their network broadcast schedule. I was more than disgusted with the entire event and have since pledged to never waste time watching the Olympics. Olympic broadcast: FAIL.

The Little Genius That Wasn't...

The FCC recently launched an investigation into the failed Fox kiddie game show Our Little Genius (Created by Mark Burnett) to find out whether producers gave potential contestants answers to questions prior to taping episodes.

In case you are curious, the show featured children from ages 6-12 answering a series of questions to win cash and prizes.

Here's Where The Troublemaker (Oops, I mean Trouble) Began....Prompting the probe was a letter from a parent, of one of the children, who took part in the show sent a letter to the FCC, in which the letter alleges that just a few days prior to taping, a staff member from Our Little Genius’s production team reviewed a list of potential topics and gave specific answers to at least four questions (perhaps even more) the child did not know the answers to or was unsure about a definitive answer.

Tina Fey is scheduled to host Saturday Night Live in April and, yes, you know what that inevitably means...Sarah Palin.

For a long time, I was deeply confused between the real Sarah Palin and Tina Fey. Every time Palin appeared on television, I would burst in uncontrollable laughter upon seeing her face - it was the oddest subconscious juxtaposition I have ever experienced.

Fey’s spot on impersonations of the former Alaska governor (and one time Republican vice presidential candidate) lightened up the 2008 presidential campaign and some would argue created an influence on the outcome - which I am quick to refute - Sarah Palin would have lost either way, come on now...

After 6 seasons (Six years in Human years), TLC is canceling one of its most popular shows, American Chopper.

Although I adore TLC, there was just something about this Motley Crew that just did not gel - it was not copacetic. Not because I'm largely uninterested in how a custom chopper is built (Even this would have been at some level of interest, but I'm not the target market), but because I refused to like these characters (Heaven knows I tried). Perhaps it was the big handle bar mustache wearing SR, the less than interesting son JR, but did find the youngest more entertaining. Oh well, another one bites the dust....Next!

American Ellen On The Job

Well, someone had a busy week. Comedian, daytime talker Ellen DeGeneres had her big debut as the 4th judge on Fox's American Idol this week, to the tune of just under 30 Million viewers. Well, I am not a great fan (Not the same w/o Paula), but the reviews were overall positive and I was pleasantly surprised with the flow and continuity during the show.

Moreover, casting Ellen could be considered moderate typecasting - Ellen is merely a "Nice" judge replacing a former "Nice" judge - not much of a stretch. Meanwhile, Simon continues to have all the fun being the "Mean" judge. My point, I propose rather than have a balanced equation of replacing like with like, mix it up a bit and have several "Mean" judges to make the show really interesting...Ha, now that would be high entertainment value (-?). Gorgeous Lost star Daniel Dae Kim is to star in the remake of 1960s police TV series Hawaii Five-O, according to reports.

This show used annoy me (Until I moved away), because I practically grew up in Hawaii during the 90's and felt the show was a grossly homogenized 'mainland' view of the islands (Which are predominantly of Asian ancestory).

Last recalled, the police drama starring Jack Lord as Steve McGarret and most of the other lead characters, baddies, supporting cast, and love interests of the original '5-0' were all sadly not Asian. My suggestion to writers Kurtzman & Orci (Fringe, Transformers) is to step outside of the box and maintain influence on the casting decisions of this modern "Re-imagined" 21st Century version of the show. Let's have a layer of diversity in the main/lead characters that accurately reflects the culture this time. Oh, and keep the theme song...

Even more impressive is the fact that it was the most watched program in US television history (Or, so we are told).

This week marks the beginning of Season 2 for "RuPaul's Drag Race" (World of Wonder) on Logo -The first-ever reality television show featuring drag queens, starring world renown queen RuPaul.

I absolutely adore RuPaul, who coincidentally has a new book out titled, "Workin' It: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style" (Cheers to that!).

This season the show hopes to introduce the new gaggle of ladies, upping the contestants to a solid 12 “girls.” So far, we are a bit heavy on the drama (I am noticing a trend) with immediate discord brewing between many of the contestants, as opposed to the (mostly) friendly 'girlfriends' experienced last season - now, it's every [Insert Your Colorful Choice Moniker Here] for themselves...Let the games begin.

Boys with Bangs Playing Spiderman

Okay, so producer Avi Arad and actor Tobey Maquire are out of Sony's Spiderman 4. The idea was to YIU "Young-it-up" in an effort to unofficially revitalize the franchise.

Allegedly, the idea is to create yet another focus on a young Peter Parker in High School (Yes, we saw this during installment 1 - but, for some reason, we need to return). So, the question is....Who will play a young Peter Parker in the next installment? It's moderately safe to presume that Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Channing Tatum are all NOT available.

According to my sources, Zac Efron (High School Musical) and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) ARE available (More like left over) and were recently in "Talks" with Sony. Now, in "Talks" is just a round about way of saying if the price is right...

BUT, which one (If either) would YOU like to see play Spidey? Wait, are you planning to even see the movie?

Jimmy does GLEE

Ha, Jimmy and his crew are taking on my favorite show, Glee in a new “series” Studio 6-Bee.

On Tuesday night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon the show’s writers, director and a cross-section of actors parodied Glee, as Jimmy rallied the crew to raise $375 so he could get some cue cards. “SECTIONALS: $380,” read a conveniently placed sign in the studio and Jimmy’s brillant plan was born. The group would enter sectionals with a rendition of Bon Jovi’s 90's hit, “Living on a Prayer”.

Remember, Fallon replaced Conan (Suggestion to Fallon, keep it creative).

The Hare Is Back!

Bravo brought back "Shear Genius" for a new third season. This time, without famed Angel beauty, Jaclyn Smith.

The new hosts, model/handbag designer Camila Alves and Jonathan ("It's about Hare") Antin team up for this season. Antin is recognized from another Bravo series "Blow Out" - no, not to be confused with "Flipping Out" - which we believed should have been the title, nor is it, "Work Out" - the other "Out" Bravo show.

Familiar judges Kim Vo (Whom we absolutely love!) and Orlando Pita make their return from the second season. Most may vaguely remember Alves from the checkstand tabloids, being that she is the mother of 2 children with boyfriend Matthew (I'm hot, but also kind of weird) McConaughey - maybe this helped in landing the hosting gig...idk.

The Makeover with Nate

Finally Oprah’s resident makeover guy, Nate Berkus (Seen in photo on right), is getting his own show. Inventively titled, “The Nate Berkus Show” it will be of course, be produced by Oprah’s Harpo Productions, and will finally be revealed on the airwaves this fall (Final agreement on the deal was the result of Harpo spending all night negotiating with NBC Universal and Sony Television).

Berkus was first discovered after doing interior design work for Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, Barneys New York, the W Hotels (My favorite) and singer/songwriter, Billy Joel. Most recently, Nate has been featured on the “Oprah” show providing room makeovers and interior design for viewers. Ah, it certainly pays to be liked by Oprah. The on-going ruckus going on over at NBC appears to have reached a final conclusion. To quickly summarize, Conan: 32 million, NBC: 0.

Jay is apparently back in his old time slot of *yawn* 11:30 PM. Quite frankly, to balance what may appear to be a completely unfair situation, I do not know of anyone within my immediate circle that actually watches Jay Leno's program.

Further, having seen and heard various comments from a number of you (eg. Jay is a bully who should retire, Conan is not funny, Jay is not funny, Et al), I could with a great amount of certainty spend hours dissecting the obvious of this debacle.

Former Baywatch star, David Hasselhoff, has announced that he is leaving America's Got 'Chicken Catcher' Talent, to star in his own reality show on A&E.

I was behind David one day in lovely grid-lock traffic on 405 freeway for a nice 45 minutes, so I have a soft spot for Hoff (Watching Knight Ridder as kid also helped).

Even better, I'm guessing the show will be called something revolutionary such as, "Hoff" - ? Or, another variation of a title that would undoubtedly contain his name and/or reference.

Having said, one could be certain the show will be big in Germany. You gotta' love the confidence...

The 2-hour celebrity filled "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon raised an estimated $60 million since last Friday, according to published reports.

An impressive effort all around. However, separate reports also claim that 80 million viewers tuned in to watch the fundraiser. Of course, the great question in my trouble making inquisitive financial mind, how did the televised event not raise more than $60 million? Moreover, what did we have to pay all of the participating celebs? Well, it's not everyday that you have a star-filled call center with the likes of Jack Nicholson taking calls...Now, those are the numbers that I want to read somewhere.

Someone who is not Paula, has now confirmed they are indeed leaving their hit show, American Idol after this current 2010 season. Last month, Simon Cowell’s brother allegedly 'spilled the beans' when he said Cowell will leave “the show after the 2010 season.

First Oprah now this news? Well, Simon had mentioned his clandestine intention about 3 or 4 years prior. Note to Simon: I am convinced that you definitely had the wrong Randy Jackson, that Simon Fuller was crazy for letting Paula go (I blame the other Simon), and completely inspired by your act of turning down the $100 Million dollar contract that Fox has offered to keep you on Idol - After all of the mentioned, this is probably your best idea yet...

Today is officially the much anticipated and heavily billed, Christmas Holiday here in the states.

My Comment: Well, of course this is not about a television show, but felt it was worthy of a cheerful post.

We are well into a glorious start, and I expect that you are hanging out, watching Yule Log (I am certain if you turn your television to any local station, you will have at least ONE Yule Log) and opening presents.

Meanwhile on this side, I awoke to Lady GaGa, the smell of Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake, and the charmingly ridiculous Action movie, "Shoot 'em up" starring Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, and Monica Bellucci. Ah, now that's a holiday...

Top Chef Roulette

This week Bravo also aired the season finale of Top Chef: Las Vegas (Magical Elves) on Wednesday evening.

My Comment: Who won? No really, have you EVER seen a more confusing season finale? If you have read the judges blogs (I am not encouraging you to do so, unless you have about an hour of free time to spend on being unproductive), but there appears to be some 'Surprise' conclusions as to who wanted whom to win.

Now then, it appears the determined winner was contestant Chef, Michael Voltaggio - according to you - the "Completely unlikeable of the two bland Voltaggio brothers", who appeared on the show. Quite frankly, I would have preferred Kevin (aka Yukon Cornelius), for the win.

Moreover, 'unlikeable/bland' is an astute commentary on your part, as I could not agree more and also personally found the entire season 'bland' and filled with unlikeable and generally irrelevant characters.

For some reason, Top Chef has become literally a characture of itself - a disturbing version of 'Jumping the Shark'. I have analyzed the show with you and continue to be slightly puzzled as to why the gloss is beginning to rapidly fade.

Is it the contestants (Now appearing more like characters in a reality show, more than professional Chefs), or could it be the judges (Padma appears to be trying at great lengths to carry the show, while Tom appears to minimizing his appearances in the show), or is the incessant "Apprentice-like" product placement, "Your reward/prize is (Insert cookware, appliances, or Glad family of products here)".

Let's hope the Chefs can finally figure out how to make dessert by next season, before someone comes up with the idea for a Just Desserts show...oops, too late.

Million Dollar Drama

This week Bravo aired the final episode of Million Dollar Listing (World of Wonder), ending a third season.

My Comment: This show (In it's current version, not the original) is one of my favorites, however not for the reasons one would normally expect.

After all, the show is not particularly useful, insightful (Attempts have been made), nor of memorable intellect. My reasons for viewing the program would be strictly for the same reason that I enjoy viewing Action Movies....'Mindless Bender'.

If you have not seen the program, it largely follows a group of young Real Estate Agents (Late 20's, early 30's) in what would appear to be big time Real Estate deals...Not so much. The show is more of glamorous narcissism of agents Madison, Chad and Josh.

Much like my own life (Although, I am not a Real Estate Agent), the mini-series is more a look at the beautiful, superficial, and conflicted malcontents as they 'Act' on camera in contrived situations, modeled and condensed representations of what would take months in real life to resolve - now, that within itself is some great writing.

Make Believe Action Hero - Real Life Lawman?

A&E Television Networks (A&E) has reported record breaking premiere of the new series, 'Steven Seagal: Lawman' with just over 3 million viewers.

My Comment: You are well aware of my great love for A&E - one of the few Cable Nets that I personally spend time watching.

Aside from having a content rich and aesthetically pleasing website (I do pay attention), miraculously and equally as impressive, I always happen to see obscure broadcasts of The Matrix - one of my favorite movies (Friends at A&E, I am watching...).

However for some unknown reason, I managed to miss the "Cops meets Above The Law" skein starring the over characterized, older, wider version of 'Casey Ryback'. So what if our scowling Action Star does not actually do any of his own scowling stunts, or play the same one dimensional scowling character hell bent on a scowling revenge, or even involved in a fabricated scowling affiliation with a secret, unconfirmed nor denied, government agency....Ah, but in a twist, really just the scowling cook...Amazing.

More important, I have yet to take a formal survey from you, my group of trusted constituents, as to the general temperature check and overall feedback on the show. After all, we are the pulse of Pop Culture. Having said, remember the show, 'Armed and Famous' -?

Merry X-Mas Charlie Brown!

The Charlie Brown Christmas Special (ABC) was preempted earlier this week for the Presidential 'State of War' address to the nation.

My Comments: First, thank the powers that be for cable (Read into this what you will...).

Clearly, many of you were largely upset over the fact that your Charlie Brown Christmas was derailed due to political matters. I completely understand the uproar that your holiday season is simply not jovial until you have seen the traditional holiday fare. I get it.

Years of Peanuts?
Just as you, I grew up watching the seasonal entertainment and as well, especially love Charlie Brown. Not only have I spent the last 30 years watching the animated 1965 classic (Now family tradition), I also had the original book as written by the late great cartoonist, Charles M. Schulz.

I will generally cease all activity (Phone calls, faxes, emails) when one of the distinctive Christmas carols begins to play, when I happen to be actually listening to holiday music - there is something about the group carol 'Christmas Time Is Here' sung around the enhanced made over Christmas Tree....Surprisingly, my entire demeanor revels in seasonal cheer (Hey, you are being entertained (At best) by the one who wakes up smiling and leaping out of bed in the morning).

It's A Date.
Returning to the point, friends at ABC have announced that they will air our precious digitally remastered classic over the next two consecutive Tuesdays (December 8 and again on December 15) to appease all previous disappointment. Well, I am going out to purchase the DVD, just in case there is another programming preemption - ah, now who is once again in control?

Its On Fox

Friends at Fox have released the latest updates to the winter schedule as follows:

"American Idol" will have its usual two-night premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Starting the following week, the Wednesday show will have to run as an hour, because "Human Target" (based on the DC comic about the world's greatest bodyguard) will be airing after it at 9 as of Jan. 20, following a Sunday night preview in between football and the two-hour "24" premiere on Jan. 17.
"Glee" will wrap up its fall run on Dec. 9, then will return on Tuesdays, post-"Idol," on April 13.
"Past Life," which was going to air after "Idol" on Tuesdays, has instead been banished to Thursdays at 9, where it will fill in for "Fringe" from Feb. 11 through the end of March.
"Sons of Tucson," a sitcom starring Tyler Labine from "Reaper," will air Sundays between "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" starting March 14.
"Lie to Me" received a full-season order, but has no timeslot as yet past next week's episode.
The remaining episodes of "Dollhouse" will air on Fridays from Jan. 8-22.
"'Til Death," which Fox keeps renewing, then immediately pulling from the schedule, "will return to the schedule at a later date."

My Comment: Note, the most important item was highlighted in Red text for your notation (Yes, there is only 1). Further, my concerns are largely around Reality fare, however the other mentions listed are simply included for your general information...Or, perhaps not...

The Adam Lambert Syndrome

ABC reported that more than 1,500 people had complained about Adam Lambert's racy performance during Sunday Night's American Music Awards broadcast.

My Comment: First, forget about the issue of blatant double standard, misogyny, sexism, hyper sexualization, objectification, and graphic violence regularly depicted against women in nearly EVERY prime time Network program. Nor, the alleged ridiculous double-speak going at another Network (CBS, airing Madonna/Britney kiss, but not Adam Lambert's now infamous smack).

Let's review from another angle...It is rather odd that ABC would mention there were "Complaints" - I am sure this is a regular occurrence that happens all the time at ABC. Second, ABC never mentioned just exactly what was said during said "Complaints". Even more puzzling is the fact that no one ever "Complains" about the regular version of malevolence often seen nightly within most Network programs (As mentioned above). Or, at least, it is never reported...

Further, I have stated that Adam is clearly a talented 'Entertainer' and should have been the blaring choice American Idol winner. The other guy (Who actually won the competition) has absolutely no personality and no interest - here's a tip, if you expect to sell records, you had better develop a stage presence and a gimmick (See: Elton John, Madonna, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, et al).

Having said, I did not find the 'Entertainment' by Adam & Co. to be of any great concern and nothing more than a publicity stunt on the scale of what one would expect while watching MTV....But wait, this was NOT MTV. A-ha! For this is where the turn of events may have went wrong.

For you see, Adam, although I appreciate the energy, creativity you presented during your performance, you cannot express free thought and progressive modernism on Network television - it just simply does not exist. I mean really, most that actually watch Network television are typically over a certain age, from a completely different generation.

Remember the meltdown over Janet Jackson's exposed, but covered, but exposed breast? I still have YET to meet one person who allegedly called in to "Complain" about the incident which apparently caused mass hysteria, confusion, and mayhem - but again, numerous complaints allegedly poured as reported by once again, ABC.

Goodbye Gosselin

Monday evening marked the final episode of the ailing Jon & Kate Plus 8 on TLC, after 5 seasons and 116 episodes on the air brought to you by Figure 8 Films.

My Comment: First, I completely agree with TLC execs responsible for the decision to pull the show from the air.

Quite frankly, the real life happenings were becoming an inconvenient distraction from any respectable family value that may have remained from the original intention of the show.

The principles (Jon and Kate Gosselin) featured in the program were for reason compelled to create separation from their television characters and their real life personalities. One could easily question the real and genuine parents versus disingenuous celebrity ambition - was it all acting?! This incomprehension of possible manufactured reality has spiraled Jon - Kate into public fodder, criticism and general disdain for a number of viewers. The matter could easily ignite an entire, lengthy debate of what is true reality and whether such a premise truly exists on television.

Moreover, my final thoughts: Jon-Kate, it is time to overlook the allure of Show business and focus on the Family business, if not for yourselves but for the children...All 8 of them.

As far as all are concerned, TLC made the right decision. Goodbye.

No Mo' O?

Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey announces during a live broadcast of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' in Chicago that her daytime television show, the foundation of a multibillion-dollar media empire, will end its run in 2011 after 25 seasons on the air.

My Comment: What?! Really Oprah, we are still reeling from the passing of Michael Jackson - now you bring us this news! I'm left with the impression that O has been thinking about this departure for quick some time (Probably hoped to expedite 5 years earlier).

Oprah and company had been securing additional office space and hiring new employees here in the Los Angeles area, for some time - a fact that went largely unnoticed by the general media.

The biggest question is of course, WHO ON EARTH will be our go to personal daily mentor? This is devastating news for a number of people (ie. Soccer Moms).

Having said, now maybe O will have some free time to hear about that 'O' Shopping Network idea that I have been trying to pitch...

Palin Express: Coming To A Town Near You

This week, one time 2008 Republican vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin has been taking the media and a few small towns by storm to promote the release of her new book titled, 'Going Rogue: An American Life'.

My Comment: Tina (as in Fey), I mean Sarah - are we almost finished with this incessant assault on the media? Spare us from your shrieking non-answers in these softball pontificating interviews. We surrender already...

First the title, 'Going Rogue' - perhaps an implied overtone as one friend and I laughed aloud, "Almost a bit gangsta' for Sarah Palin" - would you not agree? Palin does not lend well to the image of being a youthful and rebellious confident, cultural trend setter, nor overtly concerned with the mainstream in general. Or, is she?

To be clear, I am not a Sarah Palin fan for the simple reasons of not being interested in guns, hunting, Alaska in general, sugar-coating the ugly truth, nor am I '40 something year old soccer mom'. However, I do respect the idea of her strength and independence as a charismatic leader (A.k.a. Political Spin Doctor). Palin is certainly beginning to exhibit signs of a media savvy and is even using the media for her agenda. Clinton/Palin in 2012. Perhaps - one could speculate.

Speaking of unbelievable events, it is rather comical the price of Palin's book was originally priced at $28.95 and was immediately adjusted to a mere pre-order price of $4.95 (Now somewhere around $14.50). According to reports, this trickery was to catapult Palin's book on the NY Times Best Seller list.

Having said, have you noticed that EVERYONE writes a New York Times Best Seller - for this is rather suspect and quite frankly, you know how I feel about the NY Times...Let's just say, I prefer, 'Rogue Status'.

Now, about that 'Palin Family Reality Show' - Yeah, not so much...

Is It The End of The World Already?

The ultimate disaster movie "2012" stormed to the top of the box office on its opening weekend with one of the biggest takes of the year, topping just over $200 million.

My Comment: Ah, love good end of the world disaster film - have not seen one since Will Smith's Independence Day (Sequel currently in the works on this one, as well). The premise of the movie has largely associated extreme natural events in a catastrophic end of the world scenario (According to someone's questionable interpretation of the Mayan calendar).

But, The Sky Is Falling!
Classified as an 'Action/Adventure' - this is always a cautious road and the movie has not received favorable reviews.

To begin, the movie stars John Cusack of all people (Presumably, Nick Cage was not available) as 'Last man standing, but only I know how to save the world' lead character in a succession of equally stale world ending cliches that we have all come to know and love.

Greed Is Good
Having said, I believe the movie could have made even greater return if perhaps a more interesting and attractive leader with obvious sex appeal such as Jason Statham, Gerard Butler, or Josh Duhamel were cast in the main role. Because if the world is ending and I happen to be watching a movie about the world ending, I want to see eye candy...

The resounding point of the picture being, what does it really matter if the story is completely deplorable without conviction and/or logic, if the method of delivery is spectacularly senseless (In this case, a generous lobbing of disastrous laden special effects). We do not need to explain or understand scientific or cultural hyperbole and historic rhetoric for our baseless beliefs concerning the end of the world, as it's obvious we have no clue - so, let's just have some speculative fun as we enjoy our last days of the speculative apocalypse...
